Anybody else catch the Discovery Channel show about the "Hunt for Eric Rudolph"? They interviewed Tom Brown and a 20 year Special Forces vet about what Rudolph would have had to do to survive in the North Carolina mountains. One of Brown's students demonstrated a "scout pit", and they also showed a student travelling through the tree tops in a demonstration of how to evade tracking dogs (I don't think that method would work too well for me! LOL!).Brown said he had predicted that Rudolph would be found grubbing around in a dumpster. I guess he was proven right.

Yeah I saw that pretty good special, however I agreed and disagreed with Tom Brown on a few points.Traveling through water is a good idea but trying to evade dogs through the tree tops is aquestionable tactic at best. For one thing its terrain specific and may not work in all areas, also a tailed person will be pushing it and this is a good way for a survivor to be hurt in a fall,a broke leg will finish you.It may slow down dogs if you have enough lead time but I feel water is the best bet.The pit he showed is cool but who would have enough time to dig such a thing and then a dog would find you for sure.Rudolph probably spent alot of time out bush but I would bet big dollars he was getting help of some kind. The smart thing would have been to left North carolina and went west or to leave the country.

Is there anychance that this is misinformation designed to make trackers' jobs easier by having all the trackee's found either hanging off limbs or nursing compound fractures?

I know a better idea. Sneak into the local jail and lock yourself in a cell. They'll never look for you there.

I need to take one of Brown's courses. I used to enjoy his earlier books, but then something about his philosophy and writings began to strike me as maybe not for me. I know I am not the only one. His supporters are vociferous, and if it works for them great.

Concur re Rudolf getting assistance. Knowing the feds I'll bet on indictments in the not distant future.

W.S.DeWeese- I agree on Brown's writings. I found his field guides to be excellent, but some of his other work stretches the bounds of believability. I too would like to take one of his courses. Admittedly, I have never met the man, but it seems to me that the guy has merit based just on his knowledge, and embellishing the facts of his experience detracts rather than adds to that standing.

i thik the guy was sitting in someones basement eating fried chicken and laughing at the law enfrocemnt while they got frostbite looking for him. i dont think he hid in the woods, at least not for any extended time, sounds romantic, but concealment for this length of time and then be caught rooting in a dumpster, if you are together enough to live off the land for that length of time then you would not get caught with your head in a trash can. i think this guy was way overrated, he had local help that hid him out and fed him.

just my opinoin,

alex

Prolly got kicked out of his winter gig.
That's why he was dumpster diving.

In my opinion the treetop thing would take waaaaay too long.

You have to figure even if you happend to survive a fall or two you still have heavy gear to lug around. Moving about in trees seems that it would take far too long and put you in a direction that they grow and not in one that you choose.

Plus have you ever climbed a sappy evergreen?? Especially in spring.
