Tom Krein regrind..more...

They'll take you to the bleeding edge of performance, that's for sure! They look great!

Now might be a good time to say that Sodak (thank you very much) mailed to me a Spyderco Calypso with a Tom Krein regrind. It arrived yersday so I've had very little time to be anything except impressed!

The knife is VERY sharp and for the first time ever I've been able to pop hairs off of my arm. This is the sharpest knife I've ever handled. It's not so much sharper than my sharpest blades as to be *incredulous*, but it is noticeably sharper...at least.

When gently sliding my thumb off the side of the blade (as in a quick sharpness test), the blade makes a sound indicating the steel is very thin there. In fact, it is. I can hold the blade near the opener hole with my right hand, and with my left on the tip, I can actually bend the blade. (No Sodak, it ain;t bent. Yet. :D). I mean to say the blade, because of the regrind, is thin enough to be gently manipulated. Too thin for some applications, but for light to medium slicing, it seems to me to be ideal.

In fact, as I told Sodak in an email, this knife (even without the regrind) is causing me to look at Spydercos in a new light.

EDIT: Almost forgot. I cut myself with it already. Nothing too serious (my wife waived the ambulance off before they even dismounted with equipment). I've contacted a lawyer...they're researching as I write this.

EDIT: Ok. Lawyers just called. I'm SOL.

I actually sent 3 folders for regrind. The third was a caly jr which I had shortened about half an inch and made it more of a drop point blade. It also is great! I will be looking to put titanium handles in it for a shorter edc. Yes, they all came in shaving sharp!! I am looking for more to be worked on !! That is how much I like them!! It is $35.00 a regrind and Tom even beveled the back !!

I'd like to see if Tom could maybe put a high shallow hollow grind on a large Cold Steel Ti-Lite. The edge is pretty thick on it.

These Caly 3's are just fantastic, probably the best folders I've handled thus far. This one might be a semi-permanent passaround...

Lawyers? Who are you? Never heard of you. Wiped it clean of prints!!!! :D

What models & maker are those knives?

Those are my own design. The larger with the CF handles is a framelock w/titanium lock side I made myself(took forever with hand tools and call it PTERODACTYL))and had the blade ground by a well know maker here of D2. The Ivory and MOP is 440c blade I had made in Thailand by a custom maker(can't remember who) who had ground it only halfway(hollow) and Tom ground it all the way flat. They are small folders, about 2.5" blade. I love Spyderco knives and have most but wanted something to my design.

I am pretty sure he can. I had doubts with the other folder as it is made of ivory and had to be ground really close to the handle and it came out perfect! If you email him he will probably ask you to send it to him for verification.

awesome. I think I'll shoot him an email. From what I see on the knife it has a pretty shallow saber grind, and theres alot of material that could probably be moved out of the way. My only concern is the false edge at the top, but I think it's probably a non-issue for Tom.

Good to see you got the knives back safe and sound!

Those were a little challenging, but they turned out pretty good in my opinion. Glad you liked them!

I tried to do something similar today to my dragonfly... I put the 80micron belt on the sander, started grinding flat to the primary bevel, but with slightly more pressure on the edge side.

It seemed to take forever, and I had to just give up when I had taken about half of the primary bevel off. This was about 30 minutes of grinding and quenching.

I miked the edge about 1/4" back from the edge, and i was still at 1/20 of an inch... not as thin as I was hoping.

Do I just need a coarser belt, or does this take about 20 minutes per inch of blade (on average)?

1/4" back from the edge probably isn't too bad! I would guess you are close to .010-.015 at the edge. Not bad!

Yes, it can take a while at first. I start with a 60 grit belt so it goes a little faster. The ZDP-189 blades take even longer!

The results are worth the time, let me tell you, your regrinds can really cut. Now I just have to learn your sharpening skills so that I can get tree topping edges from a 600 grit finish like you do. Do I need to learn voodoo or make a deal with the devil to get toothy edges that sharp, or just practice my ass off? I guess power equipment may help, but little old me just makes do with some DMT and Spyderco benchstones for now, and I have to make due with more polished edges to get that tree topping feeling.

I just took a JYD1 down to around .010-.015 and that is the ticket. It's flat all the way to the swedge and has taken off all of the "Kershaw" logo. Made a good cutter into a screeming cutter. I was inspired by Tom and gunmike. Thanks guys.

Just reground my BM921 today on the 80micron belt... I'm sitting at 1.15mm (+/- 0.02 mm) 6.5mm behind the edge. (0.045" at 1/4" behind the edge).

Didn't mike it, but using vernier calipers right where the primary meets the secondary, I'm measuring in at 0.2mm (.008"). Secondary bevel is somewhere near 10deg per side (measured height and length for the lansky setting I was using) finished at 600grit and lightly stropped to remove the final burr.

Can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to using it. But I'm also looking forward to picking up some 80mesh belts. Anyone know a good source for 1x30" belts in those grits? Also, I'll see if I can get some pics/scans up tomorrow.

Tom reground my small classic Sebenza and it is amazing. Sharpest knife I have every had! Tom is the man to make a good knife great.
