Basically, where can I find a good source on how to do it? Would getting a book on fighting with Kama's be any good? I know they are different weapons, but they seem like they are used in similar ways. Also, has anyone been trained to flip the 'hawk around and hold it by the head, using the handle as a bludgeoning/less-lethal weapon? I am really interested in learning to use my 'hawk as a defensive and offensive weapon. Any sources on 'hawk/bowie (or other large knife) combo fighting would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.

I brought a couple hawks from Two Hawks ( www.2hawks.net ) to the Inosanto Academy. Guro Dan Inosanto told me that Filipino martial artists include in their repertoire a "reverse grip" for axe-like weapons. I've played around with it a little and having the weight of the head below your hand certainly makes the weapon quicker. That might be an advantage against an adversary with a very fast weapon like a knife, as opposed to a larger, slower weapon. The reverse grip might also be useful in really close quarters because you can, in effect, punch with the blade instead of having to swing it. Unfortunately, I don't have any real training with this grip and can't say much beyond that.

With regard to hawk combative skills in general, I believe that there have been several prior threads in this forum and in Practical Tactical that provided links to sources for training.

I think cold steel has an article on the subject, you should check out their website and see if you can find it.
