Stop knot.

If you want to stop your hand from slipping over the end of your hawk's haft, here's a thought, and its slightly nautical so it may not be liked by all.

tie a turks head around the base of the haft, and after the knot is tied before it is siezed up (tightened) pass the two remaining leads (free ends of the line) through a hole in the haft.

http://www.troop54.com/knots/TurksHeadKnot/TurksHeadKnot.htm

In Figure 12 you see the lead is passed all the way under the three leads on top, rather than go out from under the knot, simply passthrough the hole, and do the same for the oposite side lead which will sit 180 degree's oposite if properly tied. you will be left with a nice definitive round knot at the base of the haft (providing about 1/4 inch of girth to help the grip depending on the cord and how it was siezed), and a knot that basically "self-siezed" itself where you tied it due to the ends that passed through the hole you made.

hope you like the idea, sorry if its been done, I'm new here. I will post some pic's when i get home. The other post about a commemorative Navy hawk got me thinking of this one.

Hey ya'll sorry it took so long to ge tback, had to charge the camera (just finished moving) and then since I am a Linux user, my Os of choice doesn't currently like my camera. So there was some work involved in getting ready. Also some are out of focus kinda bad, sorry in advance.

After starting the knot as outlined in the nice drawing form the link, you get this, right before the last pass is made, you can count two where the others are three.

The last pass is made as it would be without the haft modification i discussed.
Picture006.jpg
the lead that ends on the underside of the knot is passed up under the entire knot.

theres the start of the mod passing both leads into the hole, and then working them through the center of the passes on the oposite side exactly 180 from where they came on the other side.

there you go, not tightly seized up, but once you get it done the leads that pass through the knot act as the stopper it wont slip off. So now you can really get a power swing out of a hawk that otherwise would take alot of effort to hang onto, especially if you got say blood or an other slippery thing on the haft.

I hope you guys like it.

Pretty cool idea! I don't know that I'd do it personally with any of my hawks, but I can see how it would help when hands get slick from sweat.

Thanks. I plan on doing this for real with good 550 cord whenever my CS TH gets here. So I might post that finished project when i get it done depending on how it looks.

Hey Ron: I tried a similar knox on my Swamp Fox belt axe and it does work. However, How Ever ....... I just gave me hell trying to access the hawk from open top sheaths. This knox might work better. Thanks so very much for posting this.

I hadn't considered anyhting other than belt carry. :o

I use a turk's head knot by the hawk head to keep it from slipping since I don't tighten the set screw in CS Hawks.
