So, for the last couple years I've had a number of production knives sitting in my safe basically taking up space. I kept meaning to sell them, but just never got around to it. The clutter was getting a bit out of control, so for incentive I decided to use the cash from the knife sales to get a new custom.

I'd had my eye on a Tommy Gann coffin-handled bowie and decided to take the plunge. Here are the specs:

  • Blade length: 8.5"
  • OAL: 13.5"
  • Forged 52100 blade steel with a loooong clip and Spanish notch
  • Nickel silver guard and carved ferrule
  • African blackwood on a frame handle with domed pins, fileworked NS spacers and domed NS accents
  • Balances just in front of guard
  • Dark brown/black leather sheath

I sure wish I had a bunch of production pieces to swap for a beauty like that - good move! It's a beautiful piece. I was tempted by it myself.

I respectfully state that I like everything except for Tommy's choice of Blackwood for the handle. ;) :) But then if to replace a safe full of production knives, even a handle of knotty pine would suffice. ;) :D

But seriously, a very nice piece. Congratulations.

The inset pearl with the faceted blackwood is a wonderful mix of different, and time consuming techniques....and his filework on the handle metal is absolutely engaging. Real nice leatherwork rounds out the package.

Obviously, Mr. Gann has confidence in his work and it is visible, when you talk to him.

I don't care for the Spanish notch, but I almost never like them...they just ruin a clean line to my eye, where it does not need to be.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

KUMBAYA!

Seriously, a first rate acquisition and a great way to start a custom collection.

Tommy Gann, JS is a good new maker, whose stated objective is to become one of the very best. He has the potential to reach his objective. His best work currently is in the Sheffield style and you have purchased one of his best examples to date. I am not in love with the Spanish notch. ;)

Tommy came by the spanish notch that he often uses honestly as it's one of Tim Hancock's trademark features. Tim's influence can also be seen in Tommy's superb fit & finish.

CONGRATS!!! That is a beautiful knife. I do not care for the Spanish notch either. I think it takes away from the flow of the knife.
I am very much a Tommy Gann fan!!

Tommy is already well on his way to his goal... It's not that his construction needs improvement... he just needs to keep getting his work in front of people... so "time" is what he needs :) IMHO. Hopefully we do not elbow each other too much on our treck ;) LOL (Just kidding, I met Tommy and his beautiful wife in Atlanta last year and they are super top notch people!).

I love this knife. It represents all sorts of difficult workmanship and it's beautiful even based solely on how "clean" it is.

Bravo on the snag and for Tommy for the work.

Since we're supposed to be rounding out comments, I think the package would look even better if the sheath were left without the tooling, but that's just my impression from the pics. A knife of this caliber would be very well at home in a tip and throat sheath as well!

Great knife!!! :cool::thumbup:

Thank You for Posting and Thank You for Saving Me from myself
Gann is on my Hit List and knives of this calibre only strengthen that opinion
Though I wouldnt order a knife with a Spanish Notch this wouldnt be a dealbreaker on This Fine Piece..Enjoy your New Aquisition.

I think that there are knives that don't suffer from having a Spanish notch, and to me this is one of them. I like everything about this knife and sheath.

Overall I think it is an awesome package. Interesting point about the notch. Looking at the knife my opinion is it is just gorgeous. After reading the posts, I think it would be interesting to compare the looks WITH the Spanish notch and without, if that were possible.

I need to get myself one of Mr. Gann's knives. I really like his work and the man has serious talent. If I recall correctly this was one of the knives he brought to Blade Show last year. I got to handle it and was extremely impressed. I also really like the cowboy fighters he does.

I agree with everyone here that Tommy's technical skills and overall craftsmanship are superb. I do hope to see him start branching out a bit more in his designs though. Does he aspire to be to Tim Hancock what Lovett, Young, and Johnson are to Loveless? You can't really go wrong doing nothing but Hancock-style work but I'd love to see him create more of his own identity.

I generally like spanish notches especially on Tim's pieces as his always seen to complement the design. As Peter, just think this one is a little over powering. Still, it's a beautiful piece.
