Tool for Leatherman Wave tool...?

My Leatherman Wave is my constant companion. As such, it's starting to show signs of everyday carry, and yes, neglect. The blades are getting pretty sticky, and hard to open. I've tried various forms of oil, natural and synthetic, as well as silicone and luquid wrench...all to no avail.

In some of the joints, I can see where some iron moths have started doing their thing, and would like to end what they've started. To do this effectively, as far as I can tell, I'm going to have to take it apart. To take the tool apart, it looks like I need some kind or torex driver...with a hole in the end. The screws look like regular torix screws, only in the middle, they have a post sticking in the middle...kind of like a hydro-shock post.

Anyone have any idea what kind of tool I need, and where I can find such a tool?

You could try an auto parts store. Theres a crapload of those tamper resitant torx bolts all over my Jeep Wrangler, i picked up a set of the bits at a local auto parts place.
good luck.

Try a good electronics supply store. One where the tradespeople go. The tamper resistant screws are used a lot in cable boxes and other electronics.

I hose down my pocket knife with WD-40 and then blow it out with high pressure air. I do this whenever it gets too much dirt built up.

That sounds like a tamper-proof torx screw to me. I think that McMaster-Carr has bits that will fit that type of screw.
I have also heard of people using a small punch and knocking the post out of the center and then using a standard torx bit, but this seems a little extreme to me.

Good luck

I was just at my local sears hardware tonight and picked up a few torx bits. They're made by Vermont American and are made to fit the tamper resistant torx screws . They had them all the way from T-7 through T-45. Their called security torx bits. $3.99 each regardless of size.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer... but I've got the sharpest knife in the room.

I know you're all just dying to hear...no luck at all at Sears and the local home improvement places. The sales people in those places all knew what I was talking about, and each of them said I was the 3rd person they'd talked to who was looking for tamper resistant torex bits. Hmmm...

The search continues. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm all ears.

I was looking for a tool to strip down Leatherman a month ago. But it looks like this "torx" is not an ordinary torx. At least in my leatherman there is a "5-ray torx" and not 6-ray as in any other torx I've seen.

I don't think disassembly is necessary. open all the tools halfway and spray the tools with wd-40 then blow off the oil with compressed air.I've been carrying the supertool for about ten years and had messed up alot of the different tools, did you know that leatherman will either fix or replace your tool at no cost. I sent mine back and they sent me a new one. It ought to be good for another ten years.

Ok...I spoke with a rep. from Leatherman today...the 5 ray tamper resistant torex seems to be a Leatherman patent thing, and they aren't about to give up any of the drivers. They just said to spray the tool with WD-40 and/or wash it with soap and water, then oil it. If that doesn't fix the problem, I was told to send it in, and they'd fix or replace it, and pay for return postage.

I guess I can't complain too much about that.
