What time of tools are needed to work on knives? I have quite a few knives from different manufacturers: CRKT, Camillus, Spyderco, Kershaw, and Al Mar.

What sort of work do you want to do on them? Once you've got some kind of sharpening gear the next step is probably to invest in a good set of Torx drivers.

Welcome aboard roma kid. Benchmade makes a little set of torx bits with a magnetic holder that fits into the case. These work fairly well although the t6 will twist to uselessness if not careful. I finally invested in a set of Wiha Tools that come in a nice metal case and include torx bits from t3 up to t10, also t15 and t20. There are also 3 phillips, a 00,a 0,and a 1. There are also 3 straight blade drivers, a 2.0, a 3.0, and a 4.0. There is also a handle that the tools will fit into. I have found that this set covers all the fastners I have run into with my knives.

Thanks. I have a Spyderco Sharp Maker. Besides Torx, would I need star or hex drivers?

Sharpmaker is a very good start for a sharpening tool. I want to think that star and torx are one and the same. Hex fastners are another thing you will encounter.

The star looking drivers ARE Torx bits. I would get a good set of hex drivers after that and make sure you GOOD QUALITY screw drivers.

If you buy torx drivers, I would highly recommend WIHA, they are light years better than the typical craftsman or even snap-on. Yes, I have had both and stripped numerous small drivers of each of those brands within a couple uses, I've had my WIHAS over a year now with not so much as a mark on the tips!
