Can anyone recommend a nice heavy flashlight with a little length? I am not looking for a fist-load flashlight I have used Mag Lites in the past and they break much too easy. Any ideas?

How do you break a mag light?

What he said. Were you using an incandescent bulb maglight or a magcharger? Those suffer from the inherent weakness of a filament bulb. If you managed to kill one of the LED equipped ones then I suggest getting a smaller flashlight and a dedicated metal whacking stick.

My 3 x D cell is > 10 years used almost daily. My mini mag has a new reflector (experiments with a fenix bulb and lithium batteries) that is 8yrs old. I have a Surefire G2 and that has failed (bulb) but still a great torch.

The Mags have rubber bezzel kits that work a treat and reduce toe damage if you knock them off the table in the night.

Being Botswana all parts are hard to source but I keep spares for all torches in a tupperware container. Bulbs are replaced every year and set aside in an old pill bottle (for kids torches). I have not had a bulb failure.

All depends what "break" means... I assume break means the bulb or filament failed. If we're talking the switch mechanism, that's fine too. However, if we're talking about a breaking the tube or head, you've got a serious problem, and I suggest ordering a flashlight made of INFI from Jerry Busse :D.

If that is not the case, several options. If you're looking for something a little smaller than a maglight, a fenix tk10 is good. If you've not broken the actual tube, but only the bulbs, you can get a Malkoff dropin- a superb, rugged LED replacement for your maglite. If you want to keep the same size roughly as a maglite, then you have to get ridiculous but awesome (and perhaps a little pricey) options. Surefire m4 comes to mind (quite pricey, but good). Olight m30 warrior, cheaper, and a shorter track record, but supposedly very nice.

Other options exist, but take a look at those, and tell us what you think. In any case, PLEASE let us know what you choose.

I've hit "things" with the head of the flashlight and the light stopped working. As the flashlights were pretty simple I opened it up and replaced the bulb, but it still didn't work. Granted I managed to crack the chrome reflector inside.

Another was a 6 D Cell light. The batteries went bad and even though it would still work, I couldn't get the batteries out and the inside was pretty nasty.

I've been thinking about a JetBeam M1X. Anything better (preferably coupled with cheaper?) :D

I've got the Olight.

If you use the extender tube, it's got a lot more leverage in my hand (sixe XL glove). With the sharp bezel insert, it gives the feeling that I need to find some thing(body) to whack..........

Regular length will leave the tailcap and head hanging out, but that's about it.

BTW, light-wise, it kicks with 2x18650.

Don't use you flashlight like a club and you won't break it.

+1 to malkoff

So it's more then just the bulb. Hmmm.

I've had several mag Lights go down with bad switches. Now I use Surefire and Pelican lights.

Perhaps I'm lucky, but I've had a two D-cell Maglight for 40 years. I have changed the bulb assembly to a LCD or whatever the upgrade is, and it still works fine.

I am a retired pilot, and it's been worldwide in my briefcase, banged around and used regularly.

i have had i bet a dozen maglites of varying sizes (ie 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 "D" cell & 2,4 &5 "C" cells)since '83 and other than bulbs i have never had any problems,

on one of the 5 "C" cell ones i got some bad batts and they leaked out and ruined the lite, i boxed it up and sent it to mag and they sent me another no questions asked.

and i used to do security at a gov't installation at nite and used them a lot, i know i went thru a LOT of batts, a surefire rechargeable woulda been nice, of course in '83 or '84 a maglite with a krpton bulb was top of the line as far as lites go, still not a bad lite if ya want something big, i keep one in the car's but mostly as a defensive tool not a lite, all my illumination needs are handled by either a surefire L4 or a fenix P1D-CE w/a leef clickie.
