Toughness of Kydex

Hey Dave, that's a good question...

Just what did you have in mind?

I use scraps of Concealex on my anvil when I want to do eyelets by hand or have to work on something I don't want to scratch...Works just fine...

Kydex is ridiculous. You can beat the living heck out of it. We used it extensively on the walls of the mental health unit at the hospital I used to work at. I remember someone conducting a sledge hammer test where they repeatedly beat on the stuff and could barely make a scratch let alone a dent. Of course, the material we used was about 1/4 inch thick....

I can't say what I have in mind just yet, but I think I have found what I'm looking for.

I was reading on the manufacturer's web site where they were saying that the stuff is highly impact resistant, but I wanted to check around too. I came here because I know that knife makers use the stuff extensively in various sheaths and would have lots of real life experience with the material's properties.

I need to do some more checking around and such, then (if all goes well) I will need some advise on working with kydex.

Concealex, is that a type of Kydex or a different material altogether? How does it compare in impact resistance in comparison to regular Kydex?

By the way Running Dog, I checked out your web site. Nice knives! Do you ever do larger knives?

Thanks!

Dave.

Hey Dave...

Concealex is Blade-Tech's version of Kydex...Different enough to be a unique product but very similer in application...

Blade-Tech produces mil-spec cases for night vison gear...I guess the Army is happy with it...

Blade-Tech showed me plans to make full size tank decoys from it to drop from airplanes!

My understanding was that Kydex was used as wall material to line hospital corridors and such...I used it for many years as a flexable and lightweight material to produce trade show displays and for mounting large photographs...

As a sheathmaker I have settled on Concealex as being a little easier to mold, but depending on your end use, I'm sure Kydex will serve you as well...

And yes we make lots of different longer knives and short swords...But we are out of production until later this summer because of having to relocate our shop

Thanks for the nice words...

We used to use the stuff way back when for armor when i used to be into the SCA , middle ages reinactment. In 3/16ths to 1/4 inth thicknesses it can take a hell of a lot of abuse... although it does transmit the force through the other side and leave a nasty welt if not padded enough.

its surprising how much abuse the thicker stock can take.... Let us know what your working on... sounds like fun.
