Traditional Japanese Style Cord Wrap?

In reading the thread on lanyards, I began to wonder if anyone knows how to create the attractive diamond shape wrapping found on Japanese knives. I have admired the pictures on R. J. Martin's site and he sure has the technique down. Does anyone know how this is done or know of any links?
