Friends,

I've recently got back into DE shaving and have been pleased with the results-and the array of items you can get on the internet:D

But, I'm wondering about travelling. What do you do for taking smaller quantities of soap or creme with you? A soap dish or creme bowl can be bulky obviously. How about brushes?Keeping them damp in a bag could be potentially disasterous. Then what about the razor itself? My Merkur 38 doesn't dismantle and is a fair lump of metal, are there 'holster's or sheathes for this kind of razor to protect them a bit?

I appreciate your experience.

I go light and with disposable items so if I have to give anything up, I'm not out a lot of money. It's an army thing. I keep a dopp kit with everything I need (even to the gym) and have not had a problem, but you never know. WMMV

I just follow a few steps when I travel, and it works out good for me:

1. Remove blade from razor and discard safely. Keep the razor in your carry-on. This way if they spot it on the X-Ray machine it's OK.

2. Throw a pack of blades in the checked luggage. If they're lost or stolen you can get more at Wal-Mart, even if they're not the brand you like. Or mail some blades to your destination.

3. Put the brush in it's original box, dry. If you no longer have the box, use a large prescription pill bottle with some holes drilled in it for ventilation. Shave the night before you depart so the brush can be dry, or just make lather with your fingers the last morning. You don't want a damp brush in your luggage.

4. Bring a small shaving stick or tube of cream that's below the TSA maximum size (3 oz). A Speick stick or a tube of Trumper's will fit this regulation.

5. Carry everything on except the blades. A DE razor and an expensive badger brush are cool-looking enough to be worth stealing by the TSA / baggage handling thieves. Even if they have no idea what to do with them, they may still steal them because they look neat and just toss them later when they realize they don't know how to use them.

Thanks Torz, I like the pill container idea.

I hate flying so my travel is long distance car, boat, train etc no problems with x-ray snoop or baggage handler bandits.

Small or trial size tubes of cream would be useful but they seem hard to find. I see l'Occitaine has travel size tubes of after shave balm but not cream, shaving sticks seem to have vanished from here in Scandinavia, pity!I use a roll-up style wash bag as this helps keep weight&bulk down and collect all small plastic bottles available. Ultra light has its uses!

Nalgene makes some very nice small bottles for things. should be able to find them online if not at a local outdoor store.

I've discovered the Merkur Travel razor that dismantles into 3 parts and goes into a TINY leather pouch. This is a minimalist's/ultra-lite dream and it delivers a dream shave too:thumbup:

I live in Scandinavia and got it on the Bay from Poland(another EU country).

He has a site in English&ships worlwide,fast delivery too:thumbup:

I can pm you the details if you like as I think posting e-bay sites might be against the rules in this forum.(I have no personal or business connexion with him!)

That's OK, Willgoy. I found them locally, well in Oregon, anyway. Gollnick should know of this place. I'll czech it out when I go down to the knife show.

Worth looking into BigJ unless you have a Yeti sized hand...won't be much use then!
Regards, W

I've got man hands but will still look into them; after all, they are for travel and not ED use. I just save around my beard, anyway.

I went with the wife up to Bellevue on an errand and we hit the big (upscale) mall to visit William-Sonoma. I went into the Excaliber store and they had a nice display of shaving product. I spotted the travel Merkur right off and bought it. It turns out he just got it in and was the only one he had. Needless to say, I am quite pleased. I just had a shave this morning so will wait a few days to try it out. It's been since I first started shaving, back in 62, that I've used a razor like this so will take it slow and make sure I don't cut my self.

I stopped in The Art of Shaving but am set with their products. They have a nice store.
