I came across a teadmill motor that I know
i can make a varaible speed out of it for a grinder does anyone know what the HP is on one. Thanks nathan

Nathan, those are generally 1 hp on up.Usually 1 1/2-2 hp.there should be an id plate affixed to the motor housing that gives all the specs.,ie: hp,voltage, frame size, rpm, etc.I am pretty sure all those t/m motors are open style,if that is the case, make sure you blow it out a lot w/air hose to lessen the chance of shorting it out w/metal dust.

Nathan I just picked up a full 2hp Baldor that came off some kind of treadmill for a good price. Now the search is on for a controller at the right price (grin)

Have to agree with Mike, most of those are open motors and will collect whatever is circulating around them. Have a state of the art treadmill in the shop now. It is a 2 hp and provides a great place to put my waders, decoys etc. I think I would invest in something sealed. Best of luck. Terry

that was a good one I think we all have things we just don't use,I came across this motor ans wanted to see if I could do anything with it,me beging green at it
I may build a grinder just for it I don't have the cash for the varaible speed now so I will make do with my coote

Why not jsut add another half hour to the job and build a shroud to cover the motor and protect it from steel dust etc. ?
Plywood should work fine if you make it oversized enough that its not touching the motor anywhere. Even if it did it wouldn't really matter, the motor shouldn't get that hot. You could have it vented in a direction that won't be likely to get dust thrown into it. The bottom would be ideal for that if its not going to sitting down on anything.
Makes a handy place to mount the controls too.

I have one that I rescued from a old treadmill and it is 1 hp. and I have one that I bought from Surpluss supply and it is a 2 hp. they have controllers for these motors....The only problem that I have found in the last year of using both these motors is that you cannot dog on them as they are not set up for torque but speed and you will keep popping the breaker that is in the controller box.I did away with this little fuse myself and have not seen any ill effects from it.Yes you do need to keep them blown out every now and then. But they do work and they are cheap enough until you can afford a good enclosed motor and torque controller....
Look in the archives and you will find a few threads on these motors and where to get them.
Hope this helps,
Bruce

I would be willing to pay for someone to sell me a motor ready to go to work. I don't know anything about 'lectricity' and have no intrest in learning.
Somebody have a supply of these motors and want to do a service or make a few bucks?
