Trouble sharpening my 0561

Ok guys I'm hoping ya'll can't help get me going here. I recently got a new 0560 and I'm having trouble getting a phone book paper slicing edge on it. I've only had it for a week and used it for normal cutting duties, mostly cardboard. It seemed to lose its hair shaving factory edge quicker than I would have thought. To be fair, I'm basing this claim on jdavis882's video of him cutting a ton of cardboard and then stropping it back to phone book paper sharp pretty easily. I haven't cut nearly that much cardboard.

I bought a sharpmaker and have tried to sharpen it twice using a couple different techniques, including following the DVD, but haven't had much luck.

I've never had much luck with any other types if sharpeners and that's why I bought the sharpmaker. Maybe I'm just not doing it right. Any suggestions would be great!

Have you tried coloring the edge with a sharpie? That will show where you are hitting with the stones.

Did you try the Sharpie trick to see if you're hitting the edge or just the shoulders?

Mine came with a real thick edge that took me a long time to reprofile down to 30*, so it wouldn't surprise me if you're hitting the shoulders only.

The paperwork that came with the knife said the factory edge was between 18-22*. So you reprofiled yours to 30* inclusive? Did you go back and put a micro bevel of 40*?

After posting this thread I took a closer look at the bevel and it looks like I'm making contact on the very edge of the bevel and also at the shoulder but not in the middle of the bevel. Is this caused from not having a consistent angel every stroke? I'll definitely have to use a sharpie next go round. How long did it take you guys to get proficient with the Sharpmaker?

Took me 2 knives. Elmax will take FOREVER to reprofile with the brown spyderco stones. FOR. EVER. Get the diamond rods and the ultra fine stones. I used DMT coarse diafold to reprofile initially, then finish up with Spyderco's stones.

I would advise you read through the Maintenance, Tinkering, and Embellishment forum. There is a ton of sharpening tips for just about anything

I have looked through there a bit, not enough I guess. I'll keep searching. Thanks for the help.

I found a Sharpmaker vid on youtube by crocket20 and he wrapped 150 grit sandpaper to do the reprofiling of the blade. What do you guys think of this method? It would certainly be cheaper than getting the diamond stones.

How do I know if I need to reprofile my blade?

The sharpie will tell you for sure if you are hitting the shoulders or not, if you are then re-profiling is necessary.

I have used sand paper taped to the Shaprmaker, works well.

Sandpaper on the triangle stones works. I've tried it. Take the extra time to wrap the triangles, and make sure it's snug.
