Practice, Practice, Practice

I've gotten one good side on one practice blade with a decent grind line. I've also played with a few finishing techniques. So now that I'm an expert ;) I'd like to try something else.

I'd like to have the ground portion (I'm using a flat grind) of the blade have a satin finish and the flats be brightly polished.

Here's a few of ideas:

1. bead blast the whole thing then redo the flats by hand sanding then polish on the side of a hard felt wheel.

2. use a scotch bright flap disk on the whole thing then polish the flats.

3. polish the flats then mask them off and use a scotch bright wheel on the rest.

BTW for the satin finish I don't really like the looks of hand sanding with 600 grit. I haven't tried a flap wheel but that sounds like it'd get the finish I want. I've also tried an 800 grit belt, but that creates a pattern. One other idea is to place a scotch bright pad on the palm sander. Might make for an interesting look.

Oh yeah has anyone tried non-woven belts?

Ideas?

Steve

PS My real steel is still on order, so some day I plan on making a real knife!

I really like the non-woven belts. I have two med., and fine. I think they give a good working finish. Or a good place to start a hand rub. I want to try some cork belts.

I second the Cork belt I hear they give a good even finish
once broke in.What kind of 800 grit belt are you using
to create a patteren,A Norax belt gives the best even finish I have seen on a knife so far in my short time at grinding. There are as many was to finish a knife ,I do not think there is a wrong way of doing it
just try different thing until you get what you want.A proper hand rubbed blade is a work of art(at least that is what I think)If you are making a working knife forget the mirror finish :)
