Hi guys,

I scrounged up a couple of Ulu pics from my files, and was wondering if anyone's got new pics of the Ulu from the recent NYC show. Was there a 3/4 size FRN proto on display yet?

The pic on top is by James Mattis of the original Ulu proto. The one below is from an unknown source, apparently of a 3/4 size proto, but it looks to still be G10.

I've got some traditional ulus and they are usually held with the thumb down one side of the grip(parallel to the cutting edge) and the first two or three fingers down the other side (curled a bit, so they aren't near the edge). Sort of a "pinched" grip.

The Ulu is very difficult to describe. It is a new concept (there was nothing in the field in the patent search). Imagine a wide knife handle. The knife blade extends (slides) sideways out of the handle edge first and locks in a partial and full opening of the blade. It is an auto in that it retracts automatically and remains closed and locked in the pocket. It is not tip up or down, but "edge back". We plan to produce a smaller one than was shown at the Blade Show. The blade is only 3/4" long, but it has a 4" cutting edge. Go figure?

The Ulu is scheduled for next year in FRN, about 75% the size of the prototypes. Cutting edge length is about 3". Not bad for a blade that is only 1/2" long.

Hi Carlos. The one pictured (same one, color is just messed up on the gray pic. They are green) has a cutting edge length of 4". The smaller one will have a cutting edge length of about 3".

We still working on the protos for the small one. The plan is to have it available some time next year, probably mid year.

Hey Sal, what colour(s) are you thinking of for the FRN? A similar shade of green? It would look nice and tool-ish. "Rescue" orange might be a good alternative.

BTW, what blade steel are you thinking of for the production version? AUS-8? VG-10? Other? I have the impression that it is very much a price-point model.
