What is the possibility of purchasing a rescue unassembled for customization?

NO, so this means you'll think about it.

Couldn't you just package the components with the usual consumer warnings:

I like "NO!" better
Less work for me....

Seriously, I just don't see this as ever being feasible....

Here's how it could work, FOR FORUMITES ONLY of course
You make all the parts like normal. Before anyone puts them together you put them in a little bag. Put that in a little box. Ship it...

It's not that much work

I hate to argue (That's a lie) but how could selling something that ISN'T a knife subject a company to more liability than selling something that IS a knife?

Think of the money you could save by NOT paying someone to assemble the knife. You don't necessarily have to pass ALL the savings along to the end-line consumer either, just a portion!

As far as a disclaimer, print one. Look at Galco Leather Company for ideas on how to print a warranty disclaimer. They don't guarantee anything! Basically, if you buy it, you are stuck with it. I still buy Galco holsters, I just know what I am getting into beforehand.

Hay I have a good idea, How about we send the BF Native in parts and you put them together could save me a lot of time, NA because I would have to write the assembly manual.
Vince.

And Debbie and Keith and I would all be opening warranty packages containing little ziplock bags..jingly ones..with a note saying..."ummm I think I screwed this up.."
UH UH...
Danelle

Yeah, this is a really great idea. Instead of Spyderco being one of the best production knife companies in the world they can be one of the best production knife piece companies in the world. Oh boy!

Well this seems to be a losing battle. But I will not concede the war. I will look elswhere for a blade to put together as I wish. All I wanted to do was take an extremely well made blade and customize the method it's carried around in for myself. Thank You for your time
(i'm not really leaving, i'm just going to drop back and re-evaluate my position)

www.halperntitanium.com sells folding knife kits...i bought one and it's still in the box cuz i don't have the tools, time or skill to do it. also bought a 12" piece of CPM3V and am trying to make a fixed blade knife of it...tell you what, I now have TONS of respect for those who grind blades as it ain't easy...why not just buy a new knife and disassemble it and use the parts you want? if you got enough skill to modify it, you surely have enough skill to take a new one apart...now how does that little ball detent work so well??? hmmmm...

I can understand how liability could be an issue, as in a) "accidents during assembly" (my Buck titanium comes with a blade cover to be used during disassembly, which is an indication that that sort of operation is [seen as] inherently more risky than using the knife as a knife) and b) "accidents due to improper assembly". In case b), who takes the blame?

I'm also doubtful that a knife model designed to be put together in a factory, using proper tools &c, will always come out just as good if you do it on your kitchen table. (I know it cannot be quality checked.)

And as regards b) above, if I made knives, I wouldn't kits on the market which would produce something <strong>looking</strong> like it came out of my factory.

"Customizing"? Well, my Executive last looked like it did when it left the factory in 1983(?). After I got it, it got a blunt tip and some serrations near the handle -- and the same happened to the Delica. So you don't <strong>have</strong> to take it apart to customize it... (but I do have to admit I wonder if there's anything I could do to my Terzuola C15 to reduce the small play which has started to show in the open position).
