What are the laws on that? I read them, but don't quite understand. Can I legally have a folder of any size on campus? If somebody could explain this issue to me more clearly, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

If you have adobe acrobat reader you can view this page about weapons from the University of California Police:

http://www.ucpd.ucla.edu/ucpd/zippdf/weapon.pdf

It says you can have a pocket knife as long as:

The blade is not over 2.5" long, it does not open automaticaly, and it is only sharpened on one side.

It's been a while, but if I remember correctly "it depends" (at least for UC Berkeley). One of the regulations they had was that you could carry a knife (no specifics on length or characteristics) on to campus if it was a required tool for your on campus job/research. I saw folks carry multi-tools, folders, etc. of all kinds on to campus, though usually discretely.

Chances are what shootist16 mentioned is the going standard now.
But things change, so to be on the safe side, ask the campus UC police and hope to hell the person you are talking to knows what he/she is talking about.

I've seen folks in Berkeley get skittish over someone cutting a grapefruit with a leatherman. I've seen professors who didn't even wince at a research assistant with 12" fixed blade. I've also seen a bank guard in berkeley who didn't even take a second look at a girl who came in with a samurai sword strapped to her back.

Does anyone know where the UCLA police gets its authority for banning any knife with a blade length over 2 1/2 inches?

None of the code sections cited on the link mentions a blade length limit for folders. Penal Code Section 626.10 prohibits knives with *fixed* blades longer than 2 1/2 inches on college or university grounds (note that this includes university-owned residence halls!). However, it does not have a blade length limit on folding blades.

Did they just state this arbitrarily? If so, how can it have the effect of law? Or is this a local campus regulation or university regulation (I haven't had the time to research this point)? I suspect that they are incorrect as to the law, and that there is really no length limit in California for folders on university grounds. But do not rely on my suspicion, because it is just that. You must do your own research. However, I feel comfortable, myself, carrying my 3" Spyderco Native at UCLA.
