So I just bought my first USMC Full Sized plain edge KA-BAR and I totally love it. I bought it with the kydex sheath so that I could have more mounting options. However, I've really been coming to the opinion that the knife needs to be in leather. I don't like the sound of a knife clanking in a kydex sheath, nor do I like the draw of a knife coming out of one all that much even if it were a little better fitting.
So I got to thinking... Has anyone tried taking a leather sheath, like the one for the KA-BAR and molding kydex over it? The purpose of course would be to have the knife sheathed in leather, but still have all of the mounting options and capabilities that a kydex sheath brings to the table. I'm guessing it would be pretty thick, and maybe a little too wide. I'm guessig that after the kydex is molded to the leather, simple contact cement could hold it in place.
Has this been done? Any thoughts on it? I've never made a sheath before, but I used to make prosthetics and am pretty comfortable with thermoplastics.
