Spyderco maintains a steel chart on their site that gives the chemical composition of the more popular knife steels.

Here on Bladeforums, Joe Talmadge wrote a FAQ on knife steels but he wrote it about five years ago and it doesn't have VG-10 on it.
Nonetheless, it has some of the best information on knife steel available on the internet and it will answer your questions about ATS-34 and ATS-55.

http://www.bladeforums.com/features/faqsteel.shtml

I understand that the Japanese developed VG-10 for their horticulture industry.
They wanted a steel that would cut aggressively without much pressure.
Apparently they needed a steel with a very fine micro-saw edge that would slice through the capillaries of plants without crushing them.
This would allow grafts, where they graft one plant onto another, a greater chance of success than if the cutting process had crushed the capillaries of the plants.

I kind of picked up the above information on these forums and I may not have it right.

Fallkniven, a Swedish knife making company, uses VG-10 exclusively for their series of hunting and survival knives.
Fallkniven describes VG-10 as a very tough steel for a stainless steel, and their fixed blade survival knives have a good reputation, largely because of the steel.

I hope Sal will comment on this because he (Spyderco) actually tests these steels.
Where the rest of us have opinions and hearsay, he has facts.

I especially enjoyed Sal's comparison of 440V to S30V.
I learned a lot.

VG-10 is an highly regarded stainless steel for cutlery. Ken is correct in that it was originally developed for horticulture.

Wow, I'm thirsty for a couple of Pilsner Urquells right now! Best beer on the planet (after Rodenbach Grand Cru).

Simona,

They are all great steels. Do you have any new pictures of yourself with your Spyderco knife? You make a great couple, and very photogenic.

All the best, Jeff/1911.

All of them are great steels. ATS-34 was used by Spyderco in the past for some of his knives. Replaced later with ATS-55 and after this, VG-10. As far as I remember, currently there's only the Vesuvius made with an ATS-34 blade. There are knife brands that still use extensively the ATS-34.
The ATS-55 is somehow better than ATS-34, the steel is stronger amd has a better edge retention (I know it has some cobalt and copper added). For eg. your Endura is ATS-55. That means it's an older batch, they use the VG-10 now.
The VG-10 is a very good steel for knives. Holds a great edge, not so hard to sharpen. Most of Spyderco knives are currently made of VG-10 (though I found they have a particular interest on the S30V).

The conclusion: get a VG-10. It is a proven reliable steel.
Hope this will enlighten a bit.
How's it going in the Golden Prague?

Hi Simona,

welcome to the Forum. I enjoy very much reading your comments on cafe in the Golden Prague. Incredible city. I visited Prague twice, as a kid, and as a young student spending a month at the University (even took a part in the demonstrations at Vaclavske namjesti (?) against Soviets - was dangerous but exciting).

Regards,

Franco

Hi,
nice, yeeee i see you are from Croatia, i like your country, im every summer 2 weeks in Baska Voda or Brela ::great sea, great romantic atmosphere, great peoples :) i love it there! :):)

As above and my personal experiences.

ATS-34- Great steel! Holds a very good edge and when tempered well is quite tough and fairly easy to sharpen. Fair rust resistance.

ATS-55- Hmmmm, I have baggage here, so be warned! Holds and edge as well as ATS-34 in my experience and is in fact slightly tougher in my experience. However I have suffered from terrible rust problems, where similar steels or better have suffered no problems. Rusts at least as badly as D2 steel in my experience.

VG10- Much to my shame I only own one knife in this steel. In my opinion this is one of the best steels I have used in a long long time. It is noticably tougher than the ATS series steels, is far more rust resistant than either and holds an edge just as well. The VG10 Endura and Delica are in my opinion some of the finest knives for the money anywhere in the world!

Hi, Simona,

glad you enjoy my country. I know Brela and Baska voda well. As a matter of fact, I was born in a city at coast (middle Dalmatia) and am a 'native' there.
Actually, it would be nice for you to get the Spyderco's NATIVE in S30V steel as your second one. That version has 'the best FRN lock in the world' according to Sal.
There is a link in my signature - ISLANDS - that brings you to Croatian islands - maybe you next destination?

Best regards,

Franco

Hi Franco,

thanks for link, i was also visiting few croatian islands, exactly Krk and Brac, really superb places :)))

Ouu, with my next knife is so, Native sure not, but i have plan for Police VG 10 with steel handle :):)
ineedsomebiggerknife.

VG10 is made by hitachi.
ATS-34 and ATS-55 is made by hitachi
VG-10 is same steel of ATS-34.
But it is controlled under japanese
marchant Takefu steel.Hitachi is not
thinking about the deliveriy problem.
Hitachi always hope a only ideal steel
making.Hitachi dont understand about
deriverly issue.

Hi Simona!
What kind of Endura do you have? In what steel? I couldn’t consider this at your photos, maybe because I didn’t see enlarged them all...
Is it the newest one with saber ground VG-10 blade or the previous version with hollow ground ATS-55 one?

Do you like big knives? The Endura as starting point could display that rather yes... IMO the Delica would make better choice for young lady’s gentle hand.

How do you like relatively new SPYDERCO Salsa as probable next Spydie to pick up?

It would do for you all you really need in urban environment and wouldn’t shock bystanders. Unless you want to shock intentionally...
