VG-10 Delica and Endura

VG10?? Well I have been MIA from this forum lately. When was this decided? Will the current ATS55 models be done away with? What was wrong with ATS55?

Some people were complaining a little while ago that their ATS-55 Spydies were rusting quickly and uncontrollably. I see no reason to doubt this, and they were mostly knife people who know that steel rusts if you don't take care of it. Probably just a bad batch.

Even so, I've not had this problem on my Delica, which I don't really baby. I have no problem with ATS-55 although it's not the easiest thing in the world to sharpen. That said, there doesn't have to be anything wrong with it to go to VG-10. VG-10 is a near-perfect knife steel in my estimation. My only concern is that Spyderco might lose money or sales on the deal, depending on whether they absorb the cost or hike the price of their pricepoint models.

That said, I'm probably waiting for the Endura in blue like my Delica.

Perhaps we need to ask whether VG-10 costs more than ATS-55, and if so by how much (%)? We've been assuming that there must be a price hike or greater costs, but what are the actual facts? Sal?

Hi Carlos. VG-10 is more expensive than ATS-55. There won't be an increase in the models, at least not this year.

Is Spyderco going to be at Blade Show West this year? If so, will the new VG-10 Enduras be making their debut?

I don't believe that we're going to the Blade show west this year.

We should have some for the NY show.

I don't think that most knife buyers would know the diffeence. We began testing ATS-55 and VG-10 about the same time. Both are good steels. We've had a better reaction to VG-10 from the knife aficianados.

It is more expensive and will ultimately be reflected in the MSRP. It is always a difficult decision to select steels for various models. We're always competing with companies offering lesser steels and lower prices. When the average knife buyer knows little about steels, he goes for the lower price most of the time.
