Now you can go all Neo on your nerdy, bushhippie friends. Whip out the one handed square knot and fill your chalice with nerd tears. If any of the bushhippies challenge you, explain that the knot is considered one handed because only one hand is doing the tying. The other hand is holding tension. They will for sure pipe down and stare in awe when you easily execute the bonus knot. Tell them instead of challenging you, they should get back to larping. You're already a level 12 dungeon master, after all.
This video is guaranteed to give you +5 in nerd shock and awe, +5 in bushhippie cred, -5 in sexy-times generation, -10 in mate attraction and +30 in saving throw vs. sexual activity. BOOYAH!:)

I'm no mathmatatician but sure looked like he used more than one hand.

just saying,,,,,,,,, i could be wrong. one hand means 1/one hand, not 1/one hand holding tension and 1/one hand doing the tying.
once again I'm no mathmatatician, but 1/one hand holding tension and 1/one hand tying is the definition of 2/two hands tying a knot.

like i said,,,, i could be wrong.
a little different technique tho

Question answered.

at 3:05 he actually says, "one hand tying and one hand manipulating the string" that is 2/two hands.

when he starts out in the video one end of the cord is tied to the upper rail of a fruit basket.

i'm not sure why i care, but for some odd reason i do.
i spent a lot of time figuring out how to tie with one hand a figure eight, bowline, and an over hand loop, and rig a munter hitch on a carabiner all with one hand.
(Right and Left hand, left hand took forever)
not one hand tying and one hand manipulating the rope.

all i can figure is its a joke video or prank.

i clicked on your youtube channel, some good vids, but its still two/2 hands.

Nah.

I tie knots. The square is one of my favorites.

There really is a distinct difference between my normal two-handed square technique and what he demonstrated.

What he demonstrated is the answer to "how do I make this stinking knot with my other hand occupied with keeping the work stationary?"

It's the same reason one-handed knives were invented. Sometimes you cannot release one of your hands to change grips in the traditional knotting manner. I've been in that position, and the result was awkward and sloppy, and required a secondary cover knot. I would have been greatly pleased to have had that technique available back then.

I'm happy to call it a one-handed knot.

You could secure the standing end with your foot, a brick, or your teeth. The actual knotting process is achieved with a single hand.

If you find yourself excessively bothered by this breach of terminology protocols, by all means don't learn the technique.

Me? I'm gonna learn it.

LOL! Rock on man. You didn't see the first 3 minutes of video number two then, with one hand sitting on the table and the other hand tying the knot? One hand was touching the string. It was tied with one hand.

To show that it is, in fact, a one handed knot, I made a separate video of just tying it with the standing end of the rope anchored and my right hand sitting on a table. I tied the entire knot with one hand, using exactly the same technique as in the first video. I even showed why one uses it (tying off bleeders using a reel of sutures) which is exactly the situation you mentioned - one hand is occupied and the other is used to tie the knot.

I wonder if I need to make a third video with a string just laying on the table and one hand coming in and tying the loose string into a square knot? I'm not sure how I would ever need that technique and I don't know of any other one-handed knots (even the bowline) that are tied without the standing end anchored. But jeepers creepers.

OK here you go - part 3. I tie a one handed square knot without anchoring the standing end. LOL!

you can take your video camera and shove it up your ass, see if you can manage that with one hand.

LOL! It is a Canon 5D mark 2, with an external mic attached and a HUGE lens. I don't think I could manage that. Thanks for watching and have a wonderful day!

You have a brain the size of a mosquito's pecker.

Nah. I'm sure he is a smart and decent guy. I think we just had a communication error and one-handed meant one thing to him and a different thing to me. I'm pretty sure if we were around a campfire we would argue for about 2 seconds, see each others points, drink a beer and move on.

WOOOOOOO NEO

HERE IS A 1 HAND BOW KNOT

But the other end is tied off! LOL! Hey are you going to PWYP this year? Becker invited me to go along this year. I don't know a whole lot about it but I hear it's a cool gathering.
