Wait time on RMJ Forge Eagle Talon?

Does anyone know what the real wait time is on an RMJ forge Eagle Talon? Their website says "3 months" but also mentions that they are a month behind on emails (i.e. orders). I was fortunate enough to handle the Eagle Talon at Blade. They sure are fine works of functional art.

I placed an order for an Eagle Talon at the end of January providing full payment via paypal, they acknowledged receipt of the order, and I have been unsuccessful in getting them to reply by e-mail or phone message since then. Although I have read good things about Ryan, I can't say my experience has been positive to date. Has anybody else had a similiar experience?

I have emailed rjm 5 times.trying to get answers with no luck.
I hope all is well with your money.I know everybody says ryan
is a great guy.but janury I would be at his front door!!!!!!
that is just a jackass that would not even call you back...
what a way to do busniess I know he does great work. to me that
dosent mean **** thats just bad busniess..... thats just the way I
see it........

Gentlemen,

If you go to the main page of Ryan's website, this is what it says:

"Special email note from Ryan - please read if you have emailed Ryan lately!

Special Email Note: June 11
We have been unable to access our email since early May. Now we are able to access the account and have started plowing through the messages. ( over 1,000 ) We apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused as we have always strived to answer mail promptly. Thanks for your continued patience as Ryan wades through the email. If you send mail now, give Ryan a few days to get back with you. Thanks so much for your patience, and again, sorry for the delayed responses."

Maybe this explains *some* of the problems you've been having... I too have had some delays in the past with emailing Ryan, but a phone call was all it took to take care of things immediatly.

I dident mean hammer ryan so badley. My family ownes a large company
I run the customer service end of it.If we did busniess like that we
would not have a company. If I was to harsh I am sorry but there is no
excusse for the way that man has been treated....... He said he paid for the product and has not had any info about any thing. And that is just piss poor. sir you would be better off dealing with twohawks or
atc both are a gem to deal with.I truley beleve rjm does quality work
but his service leavs a lot to be desired !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand your point, and it is well taken. I'm just trying to give Ryan the benifit of the doubt since I have had all good (although sometimes belated) dealings with him...and YES, his products are excellent.

Just a few days ago I was talking to one of the other
hawk nuts. about rjm mowhawk I emailed rjm back in april
with questons about said hawk. And recived no reply after
talking to the gentelman I tought I would try again. but after reading
this mans letter the other day I will not. I am sure rjm is quite
busy with eagle talon. and good for them they make quality pices
but dont forget customer service..........thats all

I ordered a Frontiersman hawk from RMJ
about a year ago. It took about 8 month's
to get it. I was very disapointed with the service but very happy with the hawk.

Have not ordered a HAWK from Ryan yet, but some day I'll be ordering a Eagle Talon.

Have exchanged several e-mail and have never wated more than a day or two to recieve a reply. Sure looks like they have been having computer problems alson with some personel problems.

Also looks like they have turned more to producing Eagle Talons over more money making hawks. Anybody ever wonder why they would be producing a military hawk instead of hawks that bring in more money?????

SO whats your point with all of this happening you just forget
customer service?????? I guess you have to pay infull for a hawk
to be ignored!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I'm going to have to respond here again. What's troubling is you pay the total price up front, you think you have a 3 month plus wait time based on the information on the web site , and then you can't get a response at 5 months plus. I ve purchased at least 8 hawks from H&B Forge over the past 6 months, some of which were custom pieces, and sent them a check for the total cost after the goods were received and had no trouble contacting them because Will produces the hawks and Mary does the rest. You would think Ryan would get somebody to do the e-mail thing so he can concentrate on production.

Order a custom Strider, Busse, Mayo, Simonich, Rinaldi, Randall, Emerson and hundreds of other custom knife makers that visit this web site. What do you see??? You pay the money up front and then pull up a stool and wait 6 months to 5 years. If you want a custom then you've got to play by the rules and stop crying when you don't get what you want.

Don't forget what you are ordering is a custom hawk from a custom maker that has to take ordere and then make the hawk. So what if he is having some e-mail problems, you are dealing with a one or two man shop doing evrything and then some.

What kind of profit margin does he have, remember lots and lots of knife makers are doing this on a shoe string budget and can't afford to hire anybody. Look at the prices he's selling the military hawks for and you try making a hawk with something left over for that ammount.

Sure customer service is important. HOWEVER, have you tried using a rather new invention called the PHONE????? If you only rely on e-mail instead of using the phone then you have other issues. Remember the best way to communicate with somebody is by voice and that means you need to call.

I cant speak for any of the other makers mentioned, but I do not ever take payment up front! In fact I know very few makers that do take up front money.

I stand corrected about Simonich asking for cash up front. and that's from the man himself:D :D

Never ment to imply that you did ask for cash up front, (been awake almost 40 hours and had a bad choice of words) but that some makers do and some dont, then you just sit back and wait till you're blade is finished and depending on who the maker is and how back up he is you will wait 6 months to years.

Well, I at least have to chime in here. Not sure how many custom products everybody has ordered, but wait-times are an intrinsic part of that process. I paid in full back in OCT/NOV of last year, and tried to rush it for a deployment to Egypt…didn’t quite make it, so I told Ryan to get the orders out to the troops heading to one of them ‘stan-counties. I’ve waited 9 months for a Mad Dog knife, a whole year for a custom Randall…6 months for a custom chest harness; for small, custom makers you really need to put everything into perspective. How many started out in a small shop/garage? How many were one-man shows? Anybody ever have family problems or computer crashes? Also, don’t forget that most makers in the “tactical arena’s” try to service the LEO/Military members first and most often state that up-front.

The only advice for Ryan I can give, is that sometimes you need to stop taking orders and complete those currently backordered so you can catch up…providing a more conservative timeline also helps , and even publishing a list of priorities with a customer number or last name may help.

BTW, Ryan finally got his computer back up and running and is sifting through tons of email. He replied to my work email, and will hopefully get in touch with you guys. I also gave him a little forewarning about some bladeformers trying to get in touch with him. I once ordered a knife from Bud Nealy…and after trying to contact via email several times, I picked up the phone and called. Mr. Nealy had a bad case of pneumonia and was bed-ridden. I strongly believe in customer service, but put that into perspective of a small custom maker as compared to a large company…

It’s been since last fall, and my Talon should be here in about a month…what has the wait cost me? Well, I get the newer designed sheath, and the updated material (no longer 1075)-which is supposedly 5 times stronger. Sure, the waiting sucks, but patience really does have its virtues !

Just give Ryan a chance, he’s an honorable guy and will follow through…and keep dreaming of that Talon!

Well I think I kind of lucked out and called Ryan while his E mail was down and got a Talon out of an batch that he had coming out, just lucky I guess took me 1 month to get my Talon.

I have aquired a new found interest in tomahawks and want to know what you guys think about RMJ's new crash axe! It looks great and with the raves about the Eagle it sounds like a great product. I have conversed with Ryan through the email and he seems like a straight up guy with an awesome product. Anyone have any extra info on the new hawk?

I am looking for a hawk to use as a piece of survival gear while flying missions in the Middle East and also as an all purpose utility tool. Any thoughts? Thanks!
