I recently purchased my first new Spyderco (R2) in 10 years. Now I want one for my other pocket.

I'd appreciate knowing more about these two models, from people who have and use them.

Thank you.

Both are going to be limited. The Walker cam in different variations (Klotzi CF, FRN, Almite). The latest one is the blue aluminum with VG-10 blade. The is also disco'd and came in two variations (not counting the variety of colors). Aluminum, and titanium. The aluminum version had several different colors and came with an AUS-8 blade while the titanium had a ATS-55 blade IIRC. Salsa was a comp lock while the Walker had the Walker lock. Salsa was made in Tiawan, Walker in Japan.

My personal feeling is that you'd should handle both models to see which one you prefer. While I immediately liked the feel of the blue Walker, the same wasn't so of the Salsa. YMMV, which is why I recommend handling both.

I don't own either one...but if I had to choose, I would go with the walker. I like the looks of the blue, and the vg-10 is great steel:thumbup: Now you've flung a craving on me, I thought I'd got that little blue knife out of my head!

I really like my blue Salsa, AUS-8 steel and all. The only change that I would make would be to make it tip-down carry.

Since you have the R2 as your user, I'd think the smaller knife would be more of your gents type knife. In that case I'd say the Walker is pretty sleek while the Salsa is more of a user.

This is a wise observation. I've never handled the Salsa, but the Walker was smoooooooth as butta' and must we say again, VG-10?

I have a Walker, and it's one of two out of twenty or so Spydercos that I own I can actually say is flawless in construction.

I have been carrying an Almite Walker for about a week. Here are my observations on it:

1. Very well finished knife.
2. VG-10 blade steel, one of my favorites.
3. Rides a little too high for my taste using the clip so I carry it in a small sheath.
4. The cut out behind the liner lock makes opening it with the left hand very easy.
5. In using the knife, my index finger falls naturally on the ridges cut into the area (choil?) behind the edge and my thumb rides comfortably on the ramp on the top back of the blade. It’s a small knife but I am able to get a secure grip on it.
6. The action is very smooth with the blade nicely centered when closed.
7. The hollow grind of the blade does not work as well for peeling fruit and veggies as a thin flat blade like on a SAK but it gets the job done.
8. I have only used this knife for light cutting but it gives the impression of being plenty strong enough for hard use if the need arose.
9. I like the open back design and it has made cleaning and drying easy.
10. I like it

I have an aluminum Salsa with the AUS8 blade. I have no complaints about the AUS8 blade. It is easy to sharpen. It is a very sturdy knife. The compression lock is as convenient as a liner lock but reportedly much more reliable. The Cobra Hood looked really ugly to me at first but I have grown to appreciate it's functionality as both an opener and thumb rest. The CNC Salsa graphic looks a bit silly, I believe there is no graphic on the black aluminum and titanium handles. The Salsa comes in several different bright colors which is nice if you want friendly looking knife. I chose red.

Keep in mind that the Salsa is not a slim little knife. The handle is wide and the blade is wide. It takes up quite a bit of room when folded in pocket and there is almost an inch of handle above the clip. Fortunately it's bulkiness also aids in filling the hand nicely when opened. The finger grooves, choil, and Cobra Hood thumb rest all make for a very comfortable grip.

Salsas are discontinued but they can still be found. I do think they are a tad overpriced though. I have seen most Salsa's for high $50's and Blue Almites for low $60's. I think the Blue Almite may be the better deal. Overall, I am happy with my Salsa but I do have a Blue Almite Walker on order.
