Hey guys. I want to learn about traditional slipjoints. (Think I'm in the right place?) I know I could go online and read anything and everything but I figured I'd try to get recommendations here on what I should/shouldn't read. I was never really into them until now so I honestly know nothing at all. I just want to learn about the different styles, who makes them, what the different blades are called and what they're used for etc. Nothing crazy or seriously in depth. Thanks for your help.

(Or you could just tell me to go online and read anything I find.)

You definitely came to the right place, just look around & join in & welcome. All the threads here have some info, one way or another

If checking out this forum is the first step you took, you are walking in the right direction. There is more traditional knife knowledge here than I could have ever imagine existed. As far as reading, I really get a lot out of "Levine's Guide To Knives and Their Values" 4th Edition if you can find one. It is touted as a complete handbook of knife collecting.

Welcome! This is the place I came to when I got bit by the traditional bug. Learned a lot from the folks here and lots of good, helpful folks. Still learning a lot. Plus, as a bonus we have those great jackknife short stories that are a must read.

There are several places with information on the different blade and pattern styles so not sure where to start. For blade shapes, there is this article. While somewhat Case biased, this link has some photos and explanations of some of the different patterns.

W.R. Case & Sons website has the Case College with lots of good info on blade shapes and patterns. Also A.G. Russell has a good steel guide which is helpful.

If you are an ebay buyer, do a search on pocket knife collecting. You will be able to purchase a book for under 10, plus shipping. As far as favorite slipjoint brands: Case, Queen, Robeson, Schatt and Morgan, Bull Dog, Fight'n Rooster, and patterns, well......Stockmans, texas jacks, whittlers, moose patterns, slimline trapper to name a few..... Welcome, you are in a good place.

I was in the same situation a month ago, so here are some of my readings so far:

This Wiki article is a good starting point IMHO:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocket_knife

After reading this article I started a google search for every pattern that I was interested in.

There are some very good, though hard to find books from Bernard Levine:

Levine’s Guide To Knives And Their Value, 4th edition, ISBN 0-87349-189-0
Pocket Knives, ISBN 1-56138-216-7

There’s also a good link list on his web site:

http://knife-expert.com/links.htm

Another link list with a lot of knife related stuff:

http://www.knifelinksportal.com/

Researching different brands will open a can of worms, a lot of brands are sold
several times over the years and it can take some time to find out who’s
producing what for which brand lately.

Knife building workshops:

Hope that helps somehow
