Hi all,

I used to wear my father's gold Wittnauer watch, but about 6 months ago I took a nasty spill and I guess the watch broke and fell off my wrist unbeknown to me. Ever since then I've been thinking about getting a new watch. I've been considering getting a more modern watch, was looking for...

- Sturdy
- Not cheap wristband
- Compass?
- Decent looking
- Not cost too much?

By much, I mean I'd ideally want to spend around $60-70 for it, but could be flexible. Perhaps some different recommendations for different prices areas? (definitely not willing to go much above the $130 area unless the watch has a toaster :P ). If you happen to have links or pics handy, that'd begreat :D

Thanks all :)

People seem to like the Casio G-Shocks if you want something rugged and reliable. They are big, black digitals though, so looks don't trump.
For around $100 I think you can get a Skagen wristwatch- thin, light, good looking, and available in titanium.

Marataq AQC might fit the bill. Not a digital, but it does have a compass. I've got one and I love it.

You also might be able to snag an orange/black monster if you really shop around or buy used.

A certain website with a big red O often has some really good deals on watches.

The Maratac AQC is made by Timex. They also sell their own version, the Expedition E-compass. There are a few different models, the T48751DH is nearly a dead ringer for the Maratac.

With the two extra buttons that appears to be a chronograph. Here is the 'Monster'...

If you just want a good, tough, reliable automatic watch with an analog dial I think it's hard to beat a Seiko diver. The SKX007, 009, 011 or the Monster can be had for under $150 if you shop around.

I'm a Seiko automatic diver fan myself. I just can't stop buying the damn things! lol Even had to stoop to buying a watch winder so I can keep them all going. Sheesh. I did, however, break the mold recently and bought a used Nike Oregon digital watch. This is the "Lance Armstrong" watch, but I got what I think is probably the bottom end watch (still nice, just no Titanium, altimeter, etc). It does more than I've ever wanted a watch to do, looks good, and I think I paid $60 for it and it looked good as new. Great, soft rubber band. I've been happy with it. Here's what mine looks like:

i am new to this forum and english is not my native language.

i carry a citizen eco-drive (sloardriven and radiotransmitted). it is tough (i don't put the watch away drillin, hammering, gardening, swimming, and so on).

it sets the time automatically 2 times a day, and the accu gets loaded by any light-source (preferred the sun for it's strength).

never had a more reliable watch than this one

sincerly

Welcome to Bladeforums, tomancik. Your English is better than good, so no worries in that regard. Enjoy.

Back on topic, I believe I have the very watch of which you speak. It's perhaps a bit too far outside of the OP's stated price range, but a great watch nonetheless.

Thanks for the recommendations all, will definitely look into them :D Have to find a local B&M retailer that carries them, watches are too subjective IMO for me to blindly ordering one online and hoping it's to my liking :)

If you have Macy's in your area they usually have a good selection of the Seiko divers. Keep in mind they will be charging MSRP, so don't get turned off by their pricing, you can score these watches online for much less.

Yep, have a Macy's within reach. I don't have a problem with ordering a watch online, but I just want to be able to inspect the model in person first before doing so. if that means going to one store and viewing their displays and then ordering online, then so be it. The only problem I will have is knowing how much the MSRP is marked up from online prices =P
