Folks,

I hearing that this is a great knife. I like the fact that the blade is ATS-34, and I like G-10 handles. I'm not sure if I really want another liner lock, although I haven't had any trouble with my Militaries so I'm not sure why I feel that way.

So...what have your experiences been? I've heard some positive comments on the Spyderco website forum already. If I buy one I would want to use it for field dressing and skinning Whitetail deer this fall, among other things.

Thanks for any counsel you may have to offer. Jeff/1911.

Great knife!!

Mine has been MIA for 3+ years in Prince George, BC with an avid elk hunter friend. I'm sure I'm never getting that one back. :)

Steve,

Probably not. However, he's sure to think you're a great guy. You really liked your Wegner, did you? Mine will be used to dress out an Alberta Whitetail this fall, if I do my part.

Jeff/1911.

That's what it was designed to do. Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game made it official use for their game processing courses.

It's a good defensive design as well.

Jeff,
They are a great knife without a doubt. Very stout construction (even with just one liner) with just the right amount of heft, IMO. The lock up is very secure and you are greeted with a reassuring CLACK! when the blade is opened. The knife is very nicely finished all around. Looks to be a very nice blade shape for deer processing chores. I am hoping as well to verify this in just about a month on a couple of whitetails of my own (OK, maybe just one?)

Wow - Dennis must be busy if he's not the first to respond to a Wegner query!

The Wegner is one of the best designed and built production folders you can buy. It would be my first choice as an "only one" folder.

The Wegner is probably the best folder/skinner you'll find. I've used mine for several years now and it has lived up to its reputation on countless occasions. If memory serves me well, I had already skinned out two deer and was 2/3's of the way through a very large boar hog last year before having to stop and touch-up the edge. And it didn't take much to do that either. I never leave home with out it. You can't go wrong with a Wegner.

Thank you all for your valued counsel. It's quite obvious that this is a great knife. I really had better jump on this one. I may be able to trade into one (plain edge) with a friend, in the next week or so. I best not wait too long, lest he changes his mind.

Thanks again, Jeff/1911.

Sorry for the delay. Things have been a little crazy. Working doubles and presenting my thesis for institutional review is taking up a lot of my time.

The Wegner is my favorite production folder. I keep coming back to it for EDC. I have carried it with me as my primary duty knife (LEO). It is one of those once in a lifetime designs that does so many things well. It may have been designed for hunting, it excels in that assignment, but it also does so many other things very well. It is a utility knife, a defensive tool, and I consider it a close friend. The Wegner is the standard by which I judge other knives. Not many can compare. Other production knives I hold in high esteem are the Benchmade 710 and the Al Mar SERE 2000. Many people tell me that the Wegner is ugly. Most change their mind upon holding and especially upon using it. Form follows function with the Wegner. I wholeheartedly endorse it. It is one of the few folders that I really trust. I feel safer going into the unknown when I have my Wegner by my side.

You better get that Wegner from your friend before he comes to his senses. :D I can about guarantee that he will miss it before long.

Dennis,

Regarding my friend with the Wegner...Yes I agree he may regret trading it, and I hope he doesn't read this thread.

Really though, if the trade I talked about doesn't occur I will quickly run down to my local dealer who has a large, plain edge Wegner on order; where I'll be waiting when it arrives with money in hand.

Thank you for your enthusiastic testimonial to the attributes of the Wegner. Your words echo those of many others, and with only limited personal experience in handling these knives I'm already beginning to observe the Wegner "magic".

I'll write back once I've got mine and had a chance to use it a bit.

Thanks again, Jeff/1911.

Jeff,

See my post in the thread about why is the Wegner tip-up.

I'm sold on the fact that this knife is the best all-around general-purpose folder I've ever seen. I haven't hunted in many years, so I can't comment on it's skinning properties. But for an everyday utility knife? Can't beat it.

Steve

Steve,

I'm sure starting to get this impression about the Wegner. I look forward to getting my own. Thanks for your response.

Jeff/1911.

Well, as things have shaken out with me...I ended up placing a special order with my local shop for the large, plain edge Wegner. So now I just have to wait...

Yippee, Jeff/1911.
