Wegner weight

I've got a W.jr. and it's a great knife. I'm considering getting its larger sibling. However, I have a concern about weight. It its too heavy, when wearing a sport coat, suit, or tropical weight clothing, it carries like a shot put. I've seen ads that list the jr. weight from 3.5 to a little over 4 oz. However, on my postal scale it weighs in at 3 oz indicating that perhaps the ads overstate its weight. That's got me wondering about the big one. I've seen the it listed at 6 oz on the Knife Center. But, a first impressions test by Ewings listed it a .3 lb, which would be 4.8 oz. At 4.8 oz its back on the table. At 6, I think it's just a bit too chunky for my purposes. Sal, or anyone, what is the actual weight of the full sized Wegner?

Hi Jack -

Sorry I don't have a postal scale (I looked - really!) but I can tell you that the full sized Wegner does carry OK with regard to weight. I compare it with a full-sized Benchmade Stryker, which has split duty with the Wegner in my pocket. While the BM has a thinner blade and an open frame, the single liner on the Wegner makes the weight about even, and an appreciable bit thinner (which, to me, is more important than weight WRT suit pocket carry).

I've carried it in suit pockets for over a year, and it pulls no more than any full sized folder, less than most. Of course, YMMV, so if the Jr. is already too much, count on Sr. being that much more.

Hey Guys
here is the skinny on the Wegner weight issue
Large C48 = 5.0 oz.
Small C49 = 2.9 oz.
I have two postal scales on hand and both read the same. I have been meaning to bring this up with the great folks at Spyderco but have'nt had a chance. The first protos did
weigh in at 6 oz. and 3.5 oz. but after final
modifications the weight was significantly reduced.

Hope this helps!
Tim

Thanks everyone for the great information. Once again, I'm stunned by how well this forum information network functions. The next purchase will be a full size folder. The Spyderco Wegner, and the Star Mate (which unhappily requires patience - a commodity in short supply around our house), are leading the pack. By processing everything from steel composition, lock design, dimensions, weight, style, blade shape, and road tests, I'll get exactly what I want without ever having physically handled, or actually laid eyes on the knife. Now that's pretty cool. Having used the jr has me leaning toward the Wegner because of the rock solid feel and the relativley innocuous appearance. After all, a knife doesn't have to look like THE BLADE FROM HELL, to cut like crazy!

Thanks again,

Jack

Greetings Tim and CD. I' ve not seen your other posts but thanks for ringing in. It is my favorite all around liner lock folder. I have 3 of them!
