Weird Patina Problem

Hi folks....

So I stripped my ESEE-6 and used a 50/50 ferric chloride and vinegar mix to put a patina on the steel. Works well for all my other knives, but for some reason, the ESEE-6 has a portion on the blade that won't patina. Anyone have any thoughts on why or on how to correct it? Thanks...here is the pic...

When you say it works well on your other knives, do you mean ESEE 1095? I would say that you might want to try giving it an evenly distributed sanding with 400 or 600 grit sandpaper and try again. If it doesn't even up, you could maybe get a hold of Rowen and ask them if it looks like something out of the ordinary. Is there any difference in edge holding or edge performance between the two discolored parts of the edge? Interesting...

Worked beautifully on my Izula. I'm not sure on the edge holding difference if any as I haven't had a chance to use it too much. I will try sanding a bit more and see what happens.

Thanks!

It looks like you wiped/scrubbed the blade with something, and the patina isn't forming in that area..don't know really, that's just what it looks like.

The non-patina'd section is the heaviest use portion of the blade. Maybe an oil residue or some remnant of the coating is preventing the etch?

I tried a few times after using acetone to clean the blade. Even lightly scrubbed with a scotchbrite before cleaning with acetone and still, nothing. Weird. I'm going to try some 400 grit, acetone and see if it will take the etch then. I'll update when I get a chance to do it.

Thanks for all the replies and ideas.

The weirdest part is that curved delineation nearest the handle. Almost looks like a perfect circle.
