me and three mates headed out onto some pig infested property. the wind was swirling around a bit, so it was a little sub ideal.

we split into two groups. me and one mate stalked around the river while the other two went through the lignum (they had the TakWak with 'em).

Mick spotted a decent black and white spotty boar about ~50m out. we had some good cover from the lignum and were able to get within ~15m of him.

as i'm getting set to take a shot, the boar looks to the left (away from me and mick) and takes off. the other pair had also spotted it and it had spotted them.

oh well, that's hunting!

on the way out, we spotted a little nanny goat (no tags, so she was a feral) tagging along with a big mob of Brahmin cattle. i was tempted to try and take it, but the risk of plugging old'mates livestock was a bit too great. those cattle were in damn fine nick too.

all up, we were out for ~3 hours. spotted a couple other pigs and a few goats but couldn't get into position to take a clean shot at them and i'm not confident enough in my ~60m shooting skills to take that kind of risky shot. i'm waiting on a new arrow rest which should hopefully fix some of my longer-range jank-shots.

heading back out again later this week. now the evenings are warming up a little, i'm organising a little two night trip on some primo hunting land i have access to in the next couple of weeks.

didn't even get to draw my bow, but damn i still had a lot of fun.

i'm using a rather badly designed whikky bikky that came with the bow package. the vertical travel action of the rest is dubious and unable to get high enough. to crown it all off, the biscuit is the wrong size for the axis ST shafts i use.

my whole bow is in dire need of some fine tuning. but it's a pointless exercise until the new rest (another, slightly higher-end funky doober model and corretly sized whisker biscuit) is installed.

i'm still postage stamp accurate out to ~20m, but much beyond that and there's some severe drift happening. i was watching one arrow wobble and fishtail it's way down range when shooting @ ~70m the other day for hoots. i managed to hit the target bale (~4'x3'ish), but it's not a shot i'd want to take on game.

Its great stuff even getting out for a few hours, beats not being out there. I went out for a day hunt the other day looking for pigs, I had the same wind issues though, seems everytime I decided on a path the wind would spin round on my back. Still had a ball though and did see some game.

Good times.

Sounds like fun ! What Bow are you shooting ? IF you don't mind me giving you a little advice & this is just my opinion ! but get away from the wisker biscuit ! I shot one for 2 seasons & like most people I thought it was the only way to go but after alot of reading & shooting - I shoot all year long, IBO 3-D shoots thru spring & summer & deer hunt thru the winter ! The Wisker biscuit is great for 30yds or less (tree stand hunting) but in my experience after that the Drop away rests will improve your shot & give you a little more speed (about 10fps) Look at the QAD LD or the Trophy Taker Extreme SL I've had both (still got the TTSL)& I love'em...will never go back to a biscuit ! I can hit accuratly out to 60yds !

well, i headed out to a different property yesterday afternoon. me and a mate counted 22 pigs inside a couple of hours.

put in a couple of good stalks, but got a little impatient which cost me a kill. the second stalk went really well, until teh wind spiralled and gave the squealer ~15m from me a big nose-full and off they went.

put in a third stalk on the way back out of the property, there was a mob of 8 pigs out in the middle of open ground. i crawled on my belly to what i thought was a 30m shot, but my range estimation-fu was off, they were actually ~40m when i paced t out after they'd scarpered.

i'm not totally sure of teh layout of the place yet, but there's certainly plenty of pigs and a few goats around. i'll have to get in amongst 'em later this week.

another unsuccessful hunt that was still a ton of fun.

did you have any guns with you just in case? you never know may happen...

pffft. nope. no pussy firearms here.

if i wanted to go rifle hunting, i'd take a rifle. unless i was out bowhunting buffalo, in which case i'd want someone with a .303 to be backing me up.

mind you, if i'd had a supressed .222 with me, i'd have dropped every pid we saw. unfortunatly, supressors are illegal in Oz.

i'm using a 70lb Fred Bear Showdown (their entry level bow from '09).

my current biscuit is all wrong, i have a new one on the way.

i daresay i'll move to a dropaway at some stage, but for now the biscuit is all fine and dandy. i can reliably hit a tennis ball at ~30m and once i get my bow tuned up properly (waiting for teh new rest before i bother) i should be good for ~40m-50m

It sounds like you are having a great time. I've used a WB rest for about 6 years, and have never had any complaints. The accuracy for me is great out to 50 yards, and thats fine, because part of the chalenge of bow hunting, is getting closer.
I only ground hunt, so I like the fact that I never have to worry about having the arrow fall, or get knocked off the rest

i hear yah 338375. creeping up to within ~20m of a wild animal in the bush is a whole adrenaline surge all of it's own.

anyways, me and two mates headed down to my Happy Hunting Ground again yesterday for another crack at some piggies and goats.

my first pig was a small one. i'd trailed a nice sized boar with some nice tusks along some dry river overflow channels and gotten ~20m from it. as i was drawing back, it wandered off into a thicket of burrs. i heard a grunt from off to my right and saw a smallish black and white pig ~10m from me.

my arrow plugged straight through his chest in a complete pass through. i'm pretty certain i hit his airbags, but missed the ticker. the pig took off and was lost in the scrub. i gave up the retrieval track in favour of stalking in on a big mob of feral goats we spotted while looking for my pig.

damn goats, didn't manage to get in range of 'em and i lost my arrow.

on the way back to the car, we spot another mob of about five pigs munching in a big thicket of pea weed.

put in the stalk with the wind almost broadside and came up on a ~30+kg little black grunter to about ~15m.

once again it was a complete pass through, a little high to shred the boiler room, but definatly through his rib cage. i found that arrow stuck in the deck ~5m past where i'd shot him..

pig didn't take off too far before stopping to assess itself. i REALLY should have stuck another pin in it at that point, but the shot would have to wind it's way through some pea weed stalks so i didn't take it. we trailed that pig, Mick tried to stick another shaft in it with his martin jaguar 55lb recurve, but the range was a little off and he missed.

i gave up on that pig after it had crossed a fenceline as it was getting dark and we still had a ~5km schlepp back to the car. mind you, if it had some decent tusks (i think it was a sow), i would have kept on after it.

all up, i counted over 30 pigs and i gave up on counting the goats, there were just that many of the things.

so yeah, two shots for two hits losing one arrow and not getting any pix.

damn i had a lot of fun!

we're already planning our next trip out there. i need to get a good mud-map of the property so we can get the car further in towards the channels and not have to waste primo dusk hunting time trekking back to the vehicle.

we might do an overnighter on Wednesday night.
