I may be trading into a Western brand stockman pattern knife. I'm not at all familiar with this brand - can anyone tell me anything about it?

From what I've seen of them, they are a great older name; 1911-91 out of Boulder.

Especially like the fixed blades!

Back when I was growing up, Western was a well respected brand. Good carbon steel, and designs that were typical of the times. If the Case little finn was the first preffered deer tool, the Ka-bar and Western leather handle knives were the runner ups.

Kind of like a Ford-Chevy-Dodge pickup debate; each had their enthusiasts. Each was a good knife.

Some very good using knives came out of Boulder Colorado.

I believe that Western Boulder has its roots somewhere in the Case family of knives; if memory serves, a Platt or two was among the founders. I'm pretty sure that Camillus bought them out in the 70's, not sure whether or how long they continued production in Boulder, but Western products showed up in Camillus catalogs to the very end.

From what I've heard, they were of good quality, and quite popular (surprise!) out west.

So, trading about 100 pieces of once-fired rifle brass of various hunting calibers would be a good deal for a stockman?

With ammo prices as high as they are, I'd say no -- at least, not if you reload or know somebody who does. If the casings are just scrap metal to you... why not?

I have a few older Western sheath knives. Most have faux bone scales, although there are a couple with leather. I like them.
They are a decent made knife. In the later years IIRC Camillus made some of them. The early slip joints are decent knives. Not fancy but good users.
Very few will bring big dollars. Most can still be had for a decent price

I have a few in the stockman and I believe whittler patterns. They are from the 50's. I like them a lot. They sharpen up real nice. Fit and finish are good. Most of all they spend a good deal of time in my pockets. I really enjoy them.
I hope this helps.
