Hi folks-

I posted this in the Wilderness & Survival forum as that's my main haunt and application for the mini, but though you all might like to see some pics/thoughts on it too. Here's the link:

Sure Is a Fine looking Hatchet, The Wetterlings Mini "Sure nuff Is a Very well Built Hatchet" Top of the line Cutting/Chopping Tool , I like there Hickory Handle's also, You can see the quality In that Beauty, Thank's for sharing the Info. & picture's,

I just acquired a Wetterlings mini at a reasonable price. I know it's a personal thing, but I like it better then the GB Mini. For one thing, the handle is a bit fatter and feels better in my hand. They left the handle kind of rough so it doesn't slip. The head also feels a bit heavier.

I had both the GB Mini and Wildlife hatchet. I just sold both of them. I have nothing against GB. As I said, it's just a personal thing.

It's interesting that Wetterlings says not to use a file to sharpen the blade. I don't remember seeing that in the GB booklet.

I have some yard work to do this weekend. I'll see how the Mini works on some light fruit tree branches.

I've heard that it uses the same head as the regular small Wetterlings hatchet. Is that correct? If so, I'd probably put up with the extra few ounces for the longer handle. However, I must acknowledge that the mini appears quite solid and is very cool looking. I expect that the heavier head no doubt gives it more cutting power than the GB mini.

That's my understanding, that it's the same head. I chose the mini just to keep it compact. It does make me want the 19" axe too though! The mini is just more likely to actually get carried.

They are reasonable enough that there's no reason not to have both!:D

Then you can have the wife/GF/kids/buddies come firewood collecting with you.

I have one also and in my opinion this is the perfect size to carry in a back pack. I think the GB mini is too small to serve as an all-round outdoor backpacking camp axe.

Where should I be looking to buy a Wetterling axe? I used to get them from Blue Ridge knives but, they no longer stock them. What's the best way to "web shop" for one?

I found one on Ebay that looks good but, just reading the specs doesn't help that much. (Ebay item #200322489263)

The USA based webstores aren't a whole lot better so, any help is appreciated. I'm specifically looking for something to carry on a belt that weighs ~1 pound with a head that can be used in place of a heavy fixed blade knife and can chop small limbs and feather wood to start a fire.

THANKS!

I got mine from Ben's Backwoods at www.bensbackwoods.com . He's a really nice guy and a pleasure to deal with. Fast shipping, too.

I don't know if the Wetterlings mini is what you're looking for, the head alone weighs 1.25 pounds. It's in your ballpark obviously. The GB Wildlife has a 1lb head though, I believe.
