Looks like next year I will be in a position to travel to Knife Shows across the USA. I was wondering what shows you think are the best. All the information you can give would be great. What city are they in? How many custom knifemakers are there? What type of knives seem to sell best? Show accomadations. Why do you like the show?

Thanks,

Wow Lynn, that is a lot of questions! In my experience the best knife shows are the Knifemakers Guild Show (for custom knives) which is in New Orleans again this year I believe. Next would have to be the Blade show in Atlanta with many many knives of all types.

CM,
I have an application for the Blade Show next year. I don't know if I will be able to get a table though. I think I may also try to get a table for the Blade Show West.

Thanks for your response,

Lynn

I heard that the guild show in New Orleans "bit the big" one this year. There was a longish thread on it earlier on one of the forums or rec.knives, I don't remember which.

I do not have personal knowledge of that show. So anything I say should not be held against me, your milage may vary Etc. Etc.

Dwight

The best show is the Blade Show in June in Atlanta, GA. It is the biggest in the US and has great floor traffic and great displays...no questions asked.

Lynn,
You HAVE to do the Orlando Knife show! Free accomodations if you don't mind driving 45 minutes!!! Being from NY originally, The NY knife show would be a good place for your knives! Lots of Law Enforcement people there.

Dr. Lathe,
When is the Orlando Show? I have a listing for one in January. It says it is an Art Knife Invitational. I didn't get an invite, and I don't think I make art knives. Is there another Orlando Show? Any and all info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Being a New Yorker I'm partail to the shows in this neck of the woods. The NY Custom is in Nov. and from it's history a little more on the tactical side. Unfortunetly last year it ran at the same time as a west coast show (I forgot which) and so there's a split in Knifemakers with the west coast people going west and the east coast people going east. ECCKS (East Coast Custom Knife Show)is pretty good too! A little more towards the art knife. Because it runs without conflicts with other events it usually has a very good showing.
Because of geography, your going to find more asian/australian/pacific knifemakers at the west coast shows and more european/african/atlantic knifemakers at east coast events.

Jerry,
Is there anything else you can tell me about this show? I would not be able to go this year, because of my increasing back log, but hopefully next year.

You know my knives. Do you think that would be a good show for me. I have sent lots of knives the the New York City area, including yours.

Thanks,

Nov 5,6,7
New York Custom Knife Show
Manhattan, New York
for info contact Joe Mangiarcina: (516) 781 - 5515

I think this would be a good show for you. It's a little more tactical than the East Coast Custom Show (in March). I know Darrel Ralph, Joe Szilaski, Pat Crawford, Alan Elishewitz, RJ Martin, Chris Reeves are some of the people who are supposed to be there ( I know there going to be a lot more, but I don't know who they are ;(
The Seattle show is going to be that same weekend (again, like last year) So it will once again divide the country and probably end up with makers going to the show that's more convienent to get to.

Jerry,
That is a great group of knifemakers. I just met Alan Elishewitz, last weekend at a gun show in Dallas. He was not set up. Him and Larry Chew came out to the show, just to meet me. They had seen on the the Knifelist, that I was going to be there. It was really cool. Larry Chew is a real joker. Alan is a shy guy. Was very cool finally meeting them.
Maybe next year, I will come to New York, and finally get to meet you. In person that is.

Thanks for the info,

Lynn -

Got to beg off on specific details, but it's in March, run by the Badger Knife Club. Get in touch with Bob Schrap (Club Pres.) or Ralph Turnbull (His wife is super-involved with the show) via TKC-L if you don't get answers you need here.

Look forward to seeing you there!

I'll second that denver show (the only one I can get to) your knifes looked great.

Pete,
Thanks. Which knife? I wish I could make it to that Denver Show. I have a show the week before though in Tulsa. My stock is running low to. I will however be at the PKA Show in Denver next year (August). Hopefully I will see you there.

Lynn, the Chesapeake Knife Show is a one day
that is held the first or second Sunday in December in Timonium MD just outside of Baltimore. It is a small show compared to the Guild Show or the New York Custom Knife show but very high quality in large part due to the custom makers that are associated with the club that puts it on. Bill Moran, Jay Hendrickson, Rob Hudson and Ray Beers just to name a few. The show is always well by attended by other top custom makers like Al Polkowski, Bud Nealy, Ken Steigerwalt, Doug and Diana Casteel and many others. I noticed from your profile that you are from Oklahoma. I know that there was at least one guy from your neck of the woods there last year but I can't remember his name. You should ask other makers you know. If you can't attend maybe one of the other guys will take some of your knives for you. The Carolina boys do that a lot---a guy will have his own knives and some of a buddy's that couldn't make it. I hope you can make it. I definitely like what I've seen of your knives on the forums and would love to actually handle one. BTW, the Show is run by Ted Merchant and fills up fast. Let me know if you are interested and I'll try and get you a phone number.
