What Did You Get at the NYC Show?

I only had time to spend about forty-five minutes at the East Coast Custom Knife Show when it opened its three-day run last Friday afternoon at the Park Central Hotel across the street from Carnegie Hall. So, I went straight to the Dozier table (with a slight case of vertigo after trying to spot the Dozier team from the balcony), and I procured the number one item on my wish list--a Bob Dozier Sweetwater (K-29)--in black micarta. I made a few other stops just to window shop and then I had to leave because of a prior commitment. Am I the only one who thought that the ballroom was rather poorly lit to allow a good look at all the knives, especially those under glass?

The poor lighting was just the start of the poor condition of the space for the show. Low cielings, to many table cramped into a small space, the weird balcony arrangment, etc. Despite all that I think it was a pretty nice show, plenty of nice knives to look at and BF members to talk with. Luckily I was able to spend pretty much the whole day Friday there and check out all the tables.

I walked away with a knife by Aaron Frederick, a neat flipper design with silver/gray G10 scales. Also picked up a set of UF Sharpmaker rods from the Spyderpeople.

Nice talking to you Erik, and seeing that neat EDC Darrel Ralph made for you. I agree the show venue left much to be desired. Unfortunately, we are stuck with it for the Nov. show as well.

Now, down to business: I scored a Bob Terzuola TTF-3A with jigged bone scales, an Elishewitz frame lock with ironwood scales and a Strider SnG. A good show for me. :D

So YOU grabbed that beautiful Bob T! I liked last year's venue at one of the times square hotels and the NYCKS venue was PERFECT (what were the name of the hotels again?)
The only thing I got was a lust for a Dozier, a RJ Martin, a Bob T and a Crawford. (I've been hanging around the Crawford tables long enough, every show, for Wes to recognize me and toss me a sticker)

5 Lums. 2 Broadwell pens. 1 RJ Martin Folding Rampage 2 waiting to be built. Dr. Darom's new book.

The only thing I should have gotten was the Sara Mi Damascus ring that was just my size.

If the promoters don' t move the show out of this Park Central next year (which is actually tentative), there' s going to be many unhappy exhibitors. This was already expressed many years back where it was formerly held. Aside from the bad lighting for most, there was an absence of a sit down/ chat area, no coat check in, and an inconveniently located minimal size mens rest room! Call or e mail the show promoter! Tell him to bring it back to either the Crowne Plaza or at least to the New Yorker.

As for blades, incredibly, I didn' t take home any at this show! But scored an Omega titanium SeaMaster Pro instead. Eat your heart out Tony! :D

I guess you missed the Ti/Tant/18K Seamaster Chrono I was wearing... ;)

I agree with you guys about the poor venu selection. That being said, I really enjoyed the show. Its such a great oppertunity to meet and talk with the makers, and handle the knives, and talk about sharp things with people of all walks of life.

I picked up a nice slip joint by P.J. Tomes, a clip blade trapper of 52100 steel, jigged bone scales. PJ's work is just incredable.

NYCKS was at the Crowne Plaza last year, correct? And ECCKS was at the New Yorker on 42nd?

ECCKS 2004 was March 5 through 7 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 49th and Broadway. NYCKS 2004 was November 12 through 14 at the Hotel Pennsylvania, Seventh Avenue and 33rd Street.

Hey you know I saw it Tony. But I'm getting there! :) But not as fast as the IRS man is getting to me. :(

Johnny, thanks for stopping by the table to say hello. And for your purchase of a fine Dozier made. Enjoy it.

FIVE Lums? Were these ordered previously and delivered at the show?

The only thing I was able to afford was a neat Bob Dozier folder with black CF, blade in a clip point. The one I REALLY wanted at that table was sitting in Nakano's pocket.

What specs on the Dozier you got Boink? What did Nakano HAVE in his pocket?

1 was. 2 was from show stock (and I waited until the show ended). 2 from a friend who needed to get new knives.... ;)

Nakano had a small or medium Dozier Hunter (?) with blasted ti scales - great little clip point, one he'd gotten some time ago - maybe he'll post a pic. I'll post a pic of mine when I can grab a camera in the AM.

Boink, yours was the newly improved large Trapper. The front end of the handle flared slightly to form an adequate guard that was absent from the original models. The clip point blade shape was refined to a more smooth flow to the overall outline of the folder. The Tab Stop mechanism was changed to the standard stop pin. And the liners are now the real beefy type as is standard on almost all of the folders in their line. As Bob would put it on occassions- "That' s a grown mans knife!". Congrats on your new folder.

It's a nice knife - just found out my gold status has slipped - no pic uploading capacity. I'll have to do something about that.

I got a Dozier Arkansas Toothpick in ironwood with brass. Perfect for NYC EDC. The venue was the pits, but at least I had a large dog to clear a path for me. They hold it there next year, and I'm gonna let him off lesh and have him herd.

Back in action. Here's a quick snapshot of the knife.

I saw that nice Toothpick you got - a rare one indeed - great looking. I had gotten a plain Jane one last year, motivated by the fact that it came in a left-handed sheath. Enjoy that great carry!
