What do you do with $400 knives? Seriously?

When I woke up this morning I checked to see if it was true. Yep, I didn't dream it. Last night I ordered a Large Sebenza, a TNT, and a Ebony Mnandi. Do people actually carry and use knives this expensive? I'd be broken hearted if I lost my BM710. I'd hang myself if I lost one of these.

I carry and use a $1200 knife, so yes, some of us do. If I lost this knife I would be very upset, but I wouldn't hang myself. I would buy another one.

Yep. I usually carry one worth that much or more every day. Too expensive not to use. Haven't lost one yet. knock on wood.

What is a $1200 carry knife like? I'm not being a wise guy, I'm really curious. It seems a cheaper, more expendable, knife could serve you just as well. Why do you choose to carry that one?

I carry a $600.00 knife as my EDC. If I lost it, I would wail like THE TACTICAL ONE:rolleyes:  :barf: after losing his Custom Emerson. But I would buy another at some point.

I look at it in the same light as a handgun. If I want to carry a customized .45ACP that I have $2,000 in, I sure want to be certain it works to PERFECTION. The only way is to train with it, practice with it and USE it.

If you life depends on it, you want to have the FINEST tools. Sometimes that means spending serious dollars.......wolf

...is meant to be spent.

At some point in your life, you'll realize that you're not getting out of this mess alive...

At some point, you'll realize that you've been working long and hard to get 'comfortable'...

At some point you'll realize that you've accumulated a lot of 'neat stuff'...

And at some point, god willing, if you've made it that far, you'll realize that you can now 'play' with your neat stuff...cuz it's yours.

You worked for it, you earned it, it's yours, you can't take it with you, so screw it, now you're going to rock...lol

At some point you do one or more of the following: Start using the Silverware, the 'good' China, crack that bottle of vintage wine you've been saving, fire up that rare Cuban 'seegar', strap on that custom handmade knife or firearm, buy that car/truck that you've always wanted...and you live, because you can, because you earned it.

Why does a person need a fine handmade knife when a good production knife at 10% of the cost will do? For the same reason people buy Dodge Viper's when a Neon will do...

I dunno, that my read anyway...but then again, paraphrased, "as usual I dont(sic) have a clue what I'm talking about"

Raven, when you buy spendy blades, get them out and use them. (insert semi-stern face here, but relaxing.....) Not talking art knives.

TNT's...(have 2)..Sebbies..(one of those)...Mnandi I don't have yet.

I use my Ed Fowlers, my custom Emersons, my Mayo TNT's. All big ticket - but they're not meant to cost the makers their blood, sweat, and tears along the learning curve just to sit on a wall.

You get out and use them. It's all kind of a team effort in the maker/buyer's world.

It's only money ... if your bills are paid and you've got the toys, play with them. You're more likely to lose or abuse a cheap knife, anyway. I might have loaned a Bic ballpoint to someone, or put it down on a desk, but my Montblanc always went right back in my pocket after I and only I used it.

There are knives that you buy to carry and use and then there are knives that you buy and shove behind glass.

The ones that go behind glass are either puchased as an investment or we're so proud of it that we need to show it off (without carrying it) or we just think it's too damn nice and to damn pretty to carry it.

If this were a a multiple choice question. . .I'd have to check the block (or little circle). . .guilty ~ all the above.

At one time I had quite a few custom and high end productions that only saw action behind glass. Then, one day, I had a maker ask me why I kept blades that he made behind glass ? I told him (see above). . . With a puzzling look and stern voice he said, "But I made them to use. There not glass ! It will shock you to see the use that they will take ! Try it. . .if it falls apart on you I'll either fix it or give you another." I went home. . .pull one that he made from behind the glass (I have 4 knives that he made) and still carry and use it today.

Don't get me wrong. . . I still have knives behind glass. . .but now I carry quite a few high $$ blades that I didn't several years ago.

I know. . .I'm being long winded so I'll close.

Yes I carry a Mayo TNT and several Sebenza's. Have to, proud to. Simply, they're not glass ! And are so cool ! !

I do have a Mnandi. . .but it's real special and rests behind glass.

I carry folders in that range and above quite often. I actually had a Darrel Ralph D/A with gold lip pearl overlays and filework that would be in the $1200 dollar range which I carried frequently.

I haven't got to the point where I have carried +$400 fixed blades yet (actually I only own 1 and it is a double edged sub-hilt fighter :D ) but I do carry and use knives at slightly less value regularly.

Use them and enjoy them.

A Buddy of mine wants a .223. I have a Gorgeous SR-15, made by Mr. Stoner himself prior to his death (of course. It would be pretty SPOOKY if he bulit it after:eek:  )
I offered him a price that's obscene for a SR-15, all decked out and fired maybe 300 times. NAH Gonna buy a BUSHMASTER.
Now, there is nothing wrong with a Bushmaster, it's a "nice" production gun. Load that sucker up with ammo, and it WILL fire, but NOT even close to what it FEELS LIKE after cooking a 40-Rounder out of the SR-15.
I made the comparison between a Benchmade and a TNT. Both can cut, but one cuts longer, better, is built to last years, and feels like it was handmade for the owner.Because it is. Just cannot say the same for a Benchmade.
The difference between a $100 Production, and a $500 custom is the same as a Bushmaster to a Stoner. Both do it, but only one Does it the way we DESERVE it to be.

As Mel says: "Buy quality and only cry once" That is GOSPEL;)

Simple answer, whats your life worth? Or maybe even does the task at hand warrant such an expensive tool? Hey would not kill myself over the loss of an expensive tool, keep a backup in the gearlocker and press on.

When I figure in the crappy exchange rate of the local currency to the US $, my $400 knife is more like $1600...

And yeah, I do carry and use them. Like many of those knife knuts who responded, I use them mostly because I enjoy the pleasure of using a fine handmade tool. Sure, they will inevitably get scratched and dinged up but I didn't plan on selling my knives anyway. Some knives just aren't meant to sit in a drawer.

I know I'm going to hate myself for saying this, but Melvin is Right!

Once you pay for the knife, the money is gone, you have a fine example of metallurgical excellence and individual artistry. I would rather use some of my knives than contemplate turning them back into money. My current daily carry knives (rotation of 3) were all in the $600 range. They were purchased specifically for daily carry and use, and their maker's intent is making the best using knives possible for the best price. To Not use them would be some sort of sin, I think...

I have other knives that I do not use that cost around $100. There are only so many knives that you can actually use. I choose to use some of the best knives in my collection because it makes me feel good. I plan on getting my money's worth over the next thirty years or so, which makes these knives seem fairly inexpensive indeed :)

Yeah, sure, and I cut the lawn in an Armani suit and have a solid gold toilet seat.

It's like certain clubs and societies,
It's all about elitism and money.

Good luck,
Allen.

This is my 400.00 USD knife and I use it every day... :)

Wow!
That is one beautiful knife!
You use it everyday and not a scratch on it...amazing.

Allen.

Yes, I am one of the guilty party who carries a $400+ knife for my EDC. I bought it to use, and I use it:) I have several other customs that I would not think of carrying, and those all stay in the safe for my enjoyment. The ones I bought to use I use, the ones that I bought to admire, I admire.

I carry an expensive (to me) custom folder every day, and I use customs everyday. A well made knife, custom or production, will last a very long time if the owner takes care of it and does not abuse it. I may baby my expensive knives a bit, but frankly I baby all of my good knives in the sense that I am mindful of what will break them and I try like heck to keep track of my property. I really see no difference between a very expensive knife and an expensive watch, car, suit, pair of shoes etc. All of us splurge on some things and scrimp on other things. Those of us who love knives obviously choose to spend on knives. Those who chose not to spend on knives don't. As long as we are genuinely happy with our decisions, it makes no difference what we choose.

I'm with the other guys on this one.

I carry a custom knife everyday. Whether it be a Terzuola, Carson, Crawford, or Mayo. All of these are pricey, but I really enjoy using them. Call me crazy, but I like the warm feeling of a custom in my pocket.

I like high quality factory knives as well, but there is something about using a custom that is worth the price.
