I had a stray basset hound playing in my front yard....no collar...:grumpy:

So, I took him in and boarded him in a kennel. Wife says it might be the dog from "down the street somewhere"...I said call animal control.

So now :foot:, I face the prospect of spending my afternoon going door to door asking if someone is missing a basset hound.

What do you guys do?

Dan

p.s. the dog was very polite and obedient...but my dogs were not so cheerful when they saw him...

one more thing....the dog stinks....bad....I was tempted to hose him down...I've washed my hands 3 times...still can smell him on me....:barf:

It shouldn't be hard to find a good home for a Basset Hound. Cleaning him up first should help, though. Wash your hands afterward with toothpaste to help with the smell. (Pretend you've been cleaning fish.) Maybe wash the dog a second time with toothpaste, too. He can't help it if he stinks. Take care of him and find him a decent home. Call the vets in your area and put the word out that you need to find a home for him.

All the stray's in the neighborhood end up at my house. I usually post a sign, notify animal control and wait.

Responsible owners are usually as busy trying to find their dog as I am to get rid of it. They get picked up in hours.

Not always:

My first Corgi, Gus showed up that way, after 2 weeks the owners finally called, they'd been too busy to come and get "Marley", appreciated me taking care of..................... blah blah blah.

Told them my dog Gus didn't know where "Marley" had run off to, sorry, no Marley here.

Hope you got the former, but, if he needs a bath that bad, do you like Bassets ?

I will admit...he is a good-lookin' dog....and I don't reall like bassies.....

The other day.....a Boston Terrier was wandering down main street in front of Tom Krein's shop - Tom went out to get him (save him from getting ran over is more like it)...and we ended up calling animal control. The animal control guy said (and I quote) "He's better off with you guys"...

He knew the dog...knew the owners.

So...for a short spell...we had a "shop dog"....cute lil guy...older...super-bugeyed...hilarious.

A few days later the owners called....:(....everybody was sad about it. Tom, me, Tom's kids, Tom's dogs, the dog itself...and the animal control guy too....:(

Kinda wish we hadn't called....but can't help it...always trying to do the right thing....Tom, that is. :D

Next time that Boston shows up, Dan, call me and I'll take him off your hands. You can just send him to me and then say (truthfully) that you don't have him!! Seriously though, Bostons are great dogs. Bassetts? Like you, they just don't appeal to me, although I know lots of folks that are right at home with them.

Could just be a simple case of a gate blowin open and the poor guy stepped out of the yard and wandered off. His owners might be sick worried about him. Does he look healthy and well fed? The odor thing is no big deal, as he is a hound dog and they usually have their own peculiar scent. Plus, owners usually get used to the smell of their own dogs and neglect bathing them if they are not obviously muddy or dirty.

I would personally call animal care and control, because that is the first place people usually look when they have lost a pet. If you really want the guy, you could tell them that if no one picks him up, you will adopt him out. Bassets are great dogs. Super sweet and really great scent hounds. Tougher than you think too! Those guys are stout! Do your dogs get along with him?

Definitely post some pics no matter what you decide to do!

Print up a few fliers and post them around. Bassets don't travel very fast so his owner has to be close by. Some newspapers have free lost and found ads.

In my area animal control really doesn't want to deal with it if they can get you to do it. I don't blame them a bit. they are overworked. If they get the animal and no one claims it they have to put it down in a very short time.
Something like three days after getting the animal.

Thanks for doing your best for the basset.

:D LOL!!!

I think Tom's less a fan than I am....:p

I found a nice german shepherd once. It seemed obvious it was a well-cared-for pet, lost.

I notified the Sheriff's Dept. and scanned the newspaper classifieds for "lost dog" ads. BINGO... "lost dog" ad matched the dog. The owners drove 150 miles (they lost him while on vacation) to pick him up and gave me a C-note for my trouble.

Good luck,
desmobob

Dan, you can keep the Bassett!! We rescued a kitten last night!!

Now we are up to two cats and two dogs. My wife says "thats ENOUGH!!":D

I've had my share of strays show up and spend their lives with me. A beautiful looking white small schnauzer showed up at work one day. No collar, no stink, ticks or fleas. Took him home, notified the local police department, made up some posters, asked around the area where he was found... nothing! Then checked with a small local newspaper. Seems they would run a 'found' ad for free. Not even that brought out an owner. I kept him for about 3 months but had to find him a home because I already had Bonnie & Clyde and Clyde did not like this newcomer at all! Worked through a local animal adoption place and within 3 weeks, the little guy was placed with a new family. Good luck with your new bassett hound. :D ps... If anyone comes to claim him and can't prove that he is there dog, make them pay at least $50 for room, board and bathing. If you give him away for 'free', there's a good chance they will mistreat him. Just my 2 cents.

***UPDATE***

@#$^@#$%

So, I made the executive decision to put the dog out in the front yard tethered - so someone looking for him could see him.

I went out to check on him....(was doing it about every 20-30 min) and oila....gone. Just like that. I sure hope it was the owners!! (I imagine it would be a pretty gawdy thing to just unhitch a dog from someone's front yard if it wasn't yours....and we live in a quiet neighborhood).

Anyway...not like I really expected a "thank you" or anything...but they could have returned the harness I put on him....or even just left it there on the ground. Took the dog and the harness and not a word. We were in the room right by the front door....we would have heard footsteps had they approached...

Oh well....no good deed goes unpunished, right?!?

Maybe they'll mail you a C-note? ;-)

Glad it turned out OK for the dog, anyway....

Stay sharp,
desmobob

I hope the right people took him... otherwise you f****d up. :( I sure do hope I'm wrong but too many dogs get stolen and used as bait for fighting dogs. If it was the actual owner, I'm sure they would have wanted to thank you.

I did manage to snap a pic earlier....

This was about 20 seconds after he peed on my wife's laundry basket (with clean clothes in it). That's part of why he ended up out front.

This is why I wanted to know what you guys' policy is...with stray dogs.

Just let 'em be?

Pick 'em up & board 'em?

Call animal control?

And so on....

I need a better policy...today didn't go over real well.

:(

Looks like a basset beagle cross.

Sounds like you did the best that you could under the restraints that you had... a really p.o.ed wife, other dogs that are equally p.o.ed.

I'd say put him in the backyard next time, call your human society, shelters, and animal control / animal warden. ALSO>..... If you're pretty sure the dog is local, or you have an idea of the vicinity he is from, put flyers up in vet's offices and PET STORES!!!!! Also, grocery stores and other very frequented locations in your area. You may want to check if it's microchipped or tattooed. I'm not sure if this is a free service from a vet. There's also lost pet registries online, I think....

Here's one:

It claims to have a success rate of almost 50%. Not bad at all.
