Looking back over the past few months and realized the the amount of information I have picked up from ESEE and here on Bladeforums.
- I Learned how to make a fire with fire steel and knife
- I Learned how to make a fire with a bow drill
- I Learned how to properly sharpen a knife
- I Learned how to make a snare with key rings and string
- I Learned you can boil water in a hollowed out log with hot rocks from a fire
- I Learned how to make a snow shelter, and you must have a hole lower than your sleeping area.
- I Learned how to make a stretcher from natural materials
- I learned about dead reckoning, off aiming and hand rails
- I learned what feather sticks were
- I learned that the Junglas makes you look cool, but I am pretty sure it only applies if you have a beer gut and 32 tactical rails on an AR-15

You get the point by now.

I think one of the best things I read was ESEE's article on Navigation. My navigation skills suck really, and there is just enough information there to get you through the day if you get turned around in the woods. Whats the coolest thing you learned?

I'm sure I could go on and on. So heres to ESEE and everyone here on Bladeforums. I have learned many good things from you guys and look forward to more knowledge, and the occasional good laugh as well.

Good stuff man. I have learned a lot from reading stuff here and then trying/practicing them in real life. Lots of really knowledgeable people around for sure. And some reality checks to boot. Good post. :)

There is a wealth of information here just in the Esee forum alone when you start looking in other places there's a lot of stuff there as well. Most of the questions i have I just use the search feature. A great group of people here who love to share information & help the lost. Its a beautiful thing

Well you guys are definitely beautiful teachers, I might add. Speaking of you being teachers will you gentleman have more than 1 domestic training class this year? This city boy from the Bronx is interested in coming down to school

That is a good question....

I learned how to spend more money I don't have on more things I don't need. (Like I needed help with that.) But despite not having the Junglas yet, I'm a lot cooler than I was before I found ESEE. At least that's what I keep telling myself, even though people still laugh at me a lot.

Thats the sort of honesty that is hard to find these days

I've learned that I don't know half of what I thought I did.
I've learned that a knife doesn't have to be expensive or use the latest or greatest wonder steel to be a damn good knife.
I've learned that owning all the latest and greatest cool crap doesn't do you a bit of good unless you actually get out and use it.
I've learned that ESEE knives are like crack.

I learned that there's a lot I don't know.

Someone, actually of a of 'someones', have spent a lot of time figuring out how to get along in very bad situations. I have not. But I know where to to go to get started learning about it.

I've spent my fair share of time ATVing through mountain trails in WV, fishing on the Great Lakes, and flying over remote Canadian wilderness in bush planes, doing the things I like to do. What I have not done is spend much time thinking about what to do if something goes terribly awry in those endeavours.

I've always kept a first aid kit with me, but not a PSK. I never went around with a knife much more sturdy than a pocket folder. I don't smoke, so I never carried a lighter, and I never thought I might have to start a fire in the woods to keep myself from freezing or dying of exposure.

God willing I will never have to do those things. But if I learn a bit here on BF (been spending time in the ESEE and WSS forums), and keep a bit of gear handy, and spend a bit of time practicing the skills we all talk about, then I'll be that much farther ahead if I find myself in a tight spot.

This is true for me as well. Prior to joining the Bladeforums community I considered myself an "avid outdoors-man" I knew that I had much to learn but was surprised at what I didn't know.

I remember watching one of the survival shows, and seeing Bear Grylls or who ever make a fire with a bow drill and think to myself, no problem I can do that.

I would say making a fire with a bow drill was one of the most humbling experiences I have had yet. I worked hard to try and make it work, and failed. Moose and some other folks here on the forums offered up some useful knowledge. It really all came down to a couple simple things that made the difference between smoke and wasted energy and having a fire.

You must get outside and practice everyone of these skills, only reading about them will likely lead to a lot of frustration and wasted energy if you ever try and implement them in an actual survival situation. Thats probably the the next most valuable thing I learned.
