I can't find any info about that on the net, it only shows up as a feature of certain knives.

Just a hole in the handle/tang of the knife where you can put a cord or leather thong to wrap aound your wrist for a secure hold.

With a little ingenuity people can find other survival aplications for them depending on the design of the knife

I put them on some of my hunting patterns because some hunters look for them. They are just a hole in the end of the handle for tying on a thong, sometimes a metal lined hole through the handle and sometimes an extension of the tang with a hole in it.

I just realised after looking at my knife that that's what it probably was. That explains why I couldn't find info about it, it's a simple feature. Thanks for the responses and not flaming me.

I look for the lanyard hole when I buy. It may not be a deal breaker, but it is pretty important imo. Whomever thought of putting a string on a pocket knife must have been a wise person.

Yeah, you get a pass on this one, but if your next thread is "Now, what's a Thong Hole?" Well, I for one am going to try you on like a boot. ;)
