What is "odd" about your knife habit?

What is is that sets you apart in your buying and using of knives? Something that you do that not many, if ANY, other people do.

With me I think it is that I will try any knife. I have owned probably hundreds of knives by now, And yet I never seem to have more than 15 to 20 at a time. This is because I am constantly selling, trading, barganing and buying knives. Something unique will catch me about it, and I will buy it. Sometimes seconds later I know it was not for me and be ready to sell it, but I have still aquired and tried many different ones. To name a few: Buck, Spyderco, CRK, Emerson, DDR, Mayo, Busse, Gerber, etc. I realize that this is not the oddest thing I could do with a knife habit, but it still seems that I am willing to spend quite a bit just to try something because it looks cool to me.

...is the way that I'm treated by my co-workers...

I'm a pretty out-going guy, with a big smile for everyone I work with, and an ear for what interests people...I smile, I listen, and I laugh with them...in other words, I'm friendly.

I've been with the company 12 years, am technically savvy, and know the product line well...so I'm part guru, part friend, and part guidance counseler...even management gives me a lot of latitude and leeway.

And, when something excites me, like talking about knives, I light up like a christmas tree... :D

We collect older RMK's, AMK's, Gerber's, A/F's and whole lot of 'stuff' that most people don't know diddly squat about...and yet my co-workers want to 'help'...

So, they bring me all these sh*t catalogs to read, and ask me questions like "What do you think of my new knife"...the one that was made in Pakistan or China...

I try to politely explain, that there are different degrees of knife quality, and we (my wife and I) collect 'something different'...only to be met with blank stares...

That's what's odd... ;)

Ummm, aren't you scared of cutting some "very important" things??

You know, this reminds me of one of the funniest posts I have seen on BF...someone in the Emerson forum claimed that he loved his Commander so much that he wore it everywhere but in the shower because he didn't know where to put it...the reply "I know where you could put it but it would probably deploy the Wave when you pull it out" :D

Oh, and what do I do that's different? Well, rather than trying to amass a huge collection, I am on the hunt for "the One" perfect knife...and when I find it, of course I won't use it :)

What's so odd about wearing one to bed? I always have a knife on me it's a miniature folder that hangs from my necklace.

What sets me apart from the rest, probably nothing, there's always a knife within reach, no matter what room, what car, what jacket or keys,(so far pretty normal).
No hair on my left arm, I'm constantly sharpening some type of knife, I can't use anything dull without pulling out a pocket diamond steel to touch it up,(nothing odd about that).
I usually carry at least 4, sometimes between 6&8 knives on me,(doesn't everyone?).
I've used just about every one of my 250+ knives in my collection at one time or another,(what's the point in owning it if ya ain't gonna use it?)
I can't pass a knife up, no matter how cheap, without looking at it and critiqueing it.
My friends all think I'm nuts,(Knife Knuts maybe, don't yours?)
Finally I'm out numbered in the real world by sheeple and non knife believers.
Ya know I can't find anything that makes what I do different, from anyone else. :)

A few months ago, I thought that my love of knives was odd in itself. Until I found bladeforums, I never knew that people were as nutty about knives as I am. Now I know I'm pretty tame as knife people go. Though, at work, they still think I'm a "Tacelberry" when it comes to knives and guns.

As for my oddities, I rearly get rid of a knife until I break it. I have had to sell some in the past to pay rent, but I miss them. I have only bought production knives, but I am about to buy a Strider. I will probably ask to be buried with it.:D

Oh, and I sleep with my SOG Tsunami under my pillow, until I can get the Strider.:D , Reagan

It´s a habit I have that affects other parts of my life.

If I have enough time I go through these steps:

1. Find a need.
2. Look for the tool to take care of that need.
3. Find the best tool for the need.
4. Start thinking about what I want in that tool (drawings, text).
5. Collecting info on how much it would cost to get it made/done to my specs.
6. Notice that I don´t have the funds to do it.
7. Find a new need...

...and so on.

Now I´m in that stage in my life that I can have a custom knife made to my specs so at last I might actually break this cycle. :)

I talk to them. They have names.

Just kidding.

I do sing songs while sharpening them though. My roommate caught me singing a Tool song to the kitchen knife once, "life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on this is necessary..."

I hope this doesn't get to be a ritual, but I cut myself with my last knife, while drunk. Yuck. A little reminder to self: Beirut and knives is bad combo.

I wore a small knife to sleep around my neck earlier, but then recently I'm concerned about it opening in my sleep, whether accidentally or by me. Same goes for IWB carry for folders :) I'm not going to put sharp pointy objects next to my most important body part. Imagine bending over and having the tip of the blade tell you that your folder is open...

when I am bored on the weekends I take out my favorite knives and caress the edges for hours.

even writing that makes me think I am odd

I guess what sets me apart from most is that i USE all my knifes. Unlike all the people who have like 30+ knives I always try to keep the number below 10 and they all get used. If i dont use a knife at least every month or so it gets sold, plain and simple i cant have that much money tied up in knives, if it aint in use its going to be sold. I used to have 10-20 knives and now im down to 5. Sold off most of my lot to pay for the 2 customs i have on order(Note to Taz, grind faster :)) You see i dont collect knive i collect tools, and use them. I have a knife for every task i could need one for, if i dont need it then i dont have it.

Same here.. i use and sharpen (often without need) all of my knives. Even if it instantly reduces it's value by 50%, i just can't imagine taking a knife out of it's box and putting it behind glass or something. I just need to feel it cutting through something, caress it's edge, reprofile the blade, whatever ;)
I do not have a single knife in my possession that can be considered "NIB" :)

I mostly buy production folders which i basicaly consider as disposeables, i use them till they break then buy a new one. During this process i'm also searching for the perfect folder for me, one which will cater for my every knife need and accompany me for years to come. The realization has started to dawn on me that i may have to look into customs in order to find this knife. :)

Ah yes the quest for the Holy Grail of EDC's one knife to do it all, think of the money I'll save. Think of the marriage I'll save,("Hon I'm done I'll never buy buy another knife after this one", "Hey what's this, a note, it say's 'I can't take you, and these f**kin' knives anymore, I took the kid, the car, and all your customs:eek: '.", "Oh no she took my customs:( , what am I gonna do now?, I know buy more knives, now I wonder if she left the checkbook?" :D

T. Erdelyi lol it's thoughts like that which make me glad i'm not married! :D
"the quest for the Holy Grail of EDC's one knife to do it all" i'll remember that term, i have a feeling i may be walking the twisted path of this quest for some time yet, ah well, might as well enjoy the scenery on the way ;) same philosophy applies to finding a wife i suppose lol

I like naming my knives and dressing them up in doll clothing. I then have religious and political debates with them, losing most of the time. Ok, not really...I lose only half of the time.

But seriously, I tend to hide knives everywhere in my apartment, much in a way that's similar to the hoarding behavior of squirrels that you always see secreting their food in holes all over the ground. I do this for a couple of reasons. If I ever need a knife, I can be sure there's one nearby, and it prevents my girlfriend from ever really knowing for sure how many knives I buy.

I'm terribly bad about purchasing knives and never using them. I have many custom knives and have not used any of them. I love to collect knives and I just cannot bring myself to cut anything with most of them.
Also, I have the habit of wanting two of the same knife. I think that if I actually have two I might use one. Usually, I end up using neither.
Some of the guys I work with wonder what's so great about knives. I tell them that for me knives are like women and German cars. I just fall in love with the design and the curves. I just like looking at my knives. I admire the different designs, especially the Japanese influenced blades with rayskin, cord wrapped handles.
I need to stay off of bladeforums and internet knife sites so that I can actually save some money instead of spending it on knives all of the time. I may actually need some professional help to slow down my addiction to blade collecting.:D

I would have to say that the most odd thing about my habit is having one on me all the time. While at work, at home, or even just being a bum and watching TV, I always have a knife on my person.

Don't worry, Jeffrey, you aren't the only one that wears one to bed. Don't sleep naked, though, I always carry my Delica, in pocket, on my shorts. :p

The night I received my Spyderco Police... i held it in my hands and went to sleep...thank goodness for you guys, my friends think i'm lethal.

What i like to do is to take out my small collection and just lay them neatly on my bed and kinda stare at them. I like to imagine the perfect situation for every knife in which i can save the world or something by using it at the perfect moment...
i did name all of them and sometimes i do talk to them (i always introduce my latest one to the rest of the gang, i think it's rude not to). I also like to rotate which one i use, with the exception of my Kabar since it's kinda hard to match an outfit with it  so that i'm being fair to all my knives. i can't bear the thought of selling anyone of them though, maybe because i have such a small collection, but i love every one of them and i think i'll sleep with my Native tonight...

Although I have just started collecting I always have a knife...except when I sleep...my gun would get jealous...so would my wife. One toy is enough. Any way the weird thig I do is...if I am looking at a knife to purchase and I cut myself accidently, I buy it. Thank God I have never cut myself with anything worth a grand.

But then I read all of these replies. First I thought of my obsession with keeping my knives razor sharp and all the bare patches on my left arm, but that got outdone. Then I thought about how I enjoy the shape and feel of my favorite for hours while watching a movie, but that got outdone. Next I thought how I hide them so people don't think I'm nuts cos of how many I have (about 25), but that got outdone. Then there's my obsession with constantly visiting shops looking at knives and always wanting to buy another one, but that got outdone. Theres always the bit where I have phases and I keep my flavour knife of the week next to my bed, but........................
Thanks, now I feel normal.
