Okay, I started to work with some Talonite yesterday and man O' man is that stuff difficult. I actually have two questions:
1. How do I cut this stuff ? I usually use abrasive discs and drill holes (I know it's barbaric but it's all I have)
2. What belts should I use ? I am using regular 3m AO. I like these on steel because although they take longer than the newer ceramic belts I feel I have more control over the grinding process because they remove steel at a slower rate and I can pay attention easier to the grinding. However, these AO belts just aren't working man. Let me knopw what ya think and thanks.....RDT

Try Ceramic belts at high speed. CZ works but doesn't last nearly as long.

Not tried the new Norton belts on Super Alloys.

Lots of real toxic dust from Super Alloys ground dry. Good respirator needed.

orange ceramic belts work best, you can only drill a hole in it with carbide drill bits.......if you want to use cheap ones go to the hardware store and buy masonry bits, but DONT let them get hot or the braze will melt and the carbide will fall out. Also silicon carbide works ok on it for flat grinding, but it wears out fast. I normally grind first with an 80 grit orange 3M belt, then go to an orange 220, and finish with a couple of blue 400 belts. Of course I am grinding small folder blades.

I buy stellite (both Talonite and 6k) in 2 ft long bars and cut it to the sizes I want with abrasive cuttoff wheels that I stick in my small bench grinder.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I was using cobalt drill bits to do my holes but it's not doing enugh cutting. Even at slow speeds and with cutting oil darn it ! Anyway I guess I'll just keep trying. I gotta attach a cut off disc to my bench grinder too...good idea. Thanks.....RDT
