I am looking in the MSC catolog to buy a respirator! which kind of filters do I want, and so many brands? HELP!

roy, i purchased a air stream 200. its a fully self contained helmet and filter system. best investment in my shop in a while. my lungs feel so much better. and your mouth does'nt get dryed out. it about $600 to the door. and worth it! www.airsteam.com its owned by 3m

If you don't want to spring for the supplied air type, above, any canister type half mask will work. Just get the organic vapor/formaldehyde cartridges for it, also get the adapter and cotton dust prefilters. Those will add to the life of your cartridges.
I use a 3M, an Aearo, a Wilson. They are all good respirators. The 3M that I am using now, is a 6000 series half mask, the cartridges are #6005, OV/formaldehyde. I like this one as the cartridges are trapezoidal, and are out of the way. I also use the cotton prefilters.
When not using the respirator, if you keep it in a ziploc bag, the cartridges will last a lot longer.
The reason for the organic vapor, AND formaldehyde cartridges is, micarta, pakkawood, and a lot of other materials , including some grinding belts, give off Phenol, AND formaldehyde gas when worked.
The organic vapor cartridge will handle the phenol, but not the other.

i used the 3m 6000 half mask for a over five years. the most important thing is to use this grade or better. your lungs will thank you.
