What knife most closely matches this wish list?

Hi all -

I've got a wish list for the next knife, and I'm kind of running into a wall on candidates. Please look at the list below - hopefully you'll think of something that meets most or all of the criteria!

  1. Blade length: between 2.75 and 3.25 inches, prefer closer to 3.25 inches
  2. Blade shape: no spear points
  3. Blade geometry: prefer flat grind. Saber-flat grind OK.
  4. Blade steel: something that can withstand "creative" use, and something I don't already have (VG-10, 154CM, BG-42, 440C).
  5. Handle material: no FRN
  6. Price: low $100 or less
  7. Locking mechanism: no preference, but if a liner lock, should be from a maker/manufacturer with a reputation for reliability
  8. Other: Not a gent's knife
  9. Other: maker/manufacturer with good customer service
I've got one blade in mind, but I'll not reveal that till later - don't want to bias the answers!

    Thanks for any help!

I will just blurt out the first knife that comes to mind with your criterea...Mini AFCK in M2 steel

I have one that is a little different.

The Buck 112. Time tested design, excellent customer service. And they are now cutting some BG-42 to upgrade some of them through their custom shop.

Delta-Z Osprey, the bolstered version!

  1. Blade length: between 2.75 and 3.25 inches, prefer closer to 3.25 inches - 3.4 inches
  2. Blade shape: no spear points - kind of a weird tanto recurve.
  3. Blade geometry: prefer flat grind. Saber-flat grind OK. - I suck at grinds, but looks like a flat grind.
  4. Blade steel: something that can withstand "creative" use, and something I don't already have (VG-10, 154CM, BG-42, 440C). - Another weird one, Z60CDV14. Think it's close to VG-10. Teflon coated, though...
  5. Handle material: no FRN - Red maple burle scales and Ti bolsters!
  6. Price: low $100 or less - Hmmm, $119.00 at www.knifeoutlet.com .
  7. Locking mechanism: no preference, but if a liner lock, should be from a maker/manufacturer with a reputation for reliability - Not sure about their rep, but haven't heard any complaints about their quality.
  8. Other: Not a gent's knife - Could be an outdoor knife, tactical, and gent's in a pinch.
  9. Other: maker/manufacturer with good customer service - They have a forum right here and again...no complaints!
Hope this helps!

Am I that transparent? That's the one I came up with :)

Questions:
- I've handled the 705, and it felt to small for my hands. I prefer handles about the size of a small Sebbie, or a Spyderco Native. Is the mini AFCK still a handful?

- Is this a saber-flat grind?

- Is BM planning on making a mini version of the Axis AFCK?

- How good is the liner lock on the mini AFCK?

Thanks,

Matthew

That's a nice knife, especially for the money. Do you know if Buck will be offering customized versions of the 112, or just a choice of blade steel?

Thanks,

Matthew

How about the Lil' Temperance from Spyderco?

I've been considering that one as well. While it really trips my trigger from an engineering point of view, the aesthetics just don't do much for me.

Plus, along with all the other knife knuts out there, I really prefer the leaf point version :)

Hmmm...that's an interesting choice. Where did you see it for $119? When I looked at Knifecenter, I could not find it, and the other place I found it at had it for $139.

I've got the large Calypso - and it's a great knife. The only thing stopping me from the Jr. is the FRN handle - that's probably the strongest criteria I have.

Is the Salsa Titanium shipping yet? It seems to be a good, sturdy knife - but a little on the smaller end of the scale at about 2.5". Also, what blade steel is used in the Titanium version - the web site lists AUS-8 for the aluminum-scaled version?

Thanks,

Matthew

Sheesh, sorry about that. I should not be allowed to reply when under the influence of sinus medicines! Didn't even see that you wrote KnifeOutlet the first time...

BTW, I notice that they list the blade steel as AUS-8 - where did you get the reference to the other steel from?

Thanks,

Matthew

I miss the obvious all the time without the aid of sinus medicines!

I believe that the G-10 versions use AUS-8, but the bolstered version uses that odd steel. I got that tidbit from Delta-Z's website, specifically here.

Hmm, it appears that CRKT uses that steel in the Navajo line as well. From their website, it appears that Z60CDV14 falls somewhere between AUS-6 and AUS-8, but I leave it to the steel experts to tell me what that means :)

This is a ridiculously easy one. Get a Camillus EDC in what ever blade material suits you.

1. Blade length: 2.95"
2. Blade shape: not a spear point
3. Blade geometry: flat grind and recurve.
4. Blade steel: D2, 154CM, talonite or 420HC
5. Handle material: 420HC
6. Price: D2 version is only $85.00 at A.G. Russell!!!
7. Locking mechanism: solid frame lock
8. Other: working man's knife
9. Other: Camillus has the best customer service out there

Kershaw XXL Starkey Ridge-ATS-34 blade, Titanium liners, G-10 scales. The blade is saber ground, with a pointy point and lots of belly.

Excellent suggestion on the EDC. If you want to wait a while, Spyderco's Paramilitary (smaller Military) should be awesome...I believe it will be out by the end of the summer. Will have the compression lock, probably olive drab G-10 scales, and the blade will probably be either S30V or VG-10.
