I need an axe to split wood at the house, I'm thinking about either the Estwing 26 inch camp axe or the Fiskars 28 splitting axe, if I get the splitting axe I'm going to have to get another axe for cutting. Not like that is a problem having more cutting tools but it would be one less tool to clean and maintain. Please don't recommend the real expensive high end stuff, and plus I don't like wood handled tools. Sorry I know to many here that is blasphamey but I just don't like em. It has been my experience that fiberglass, steel or other synthetics hold up much better.

Thanks for the recommendations in advance

If you are going to split alot of wood you better get a splitter. A half way decent one can be picked up at a hardware store. I got a 8 pounder at ace hardware for approx 30 bucks and split alot of wood with it last winter. Also use a couple old ones I picked up at garage sales....
Going to try a short handled 3 pounder this weekend at the fire pit ....http://www.peaveymfg.com/mmaul.html

You don't need a short handled axe for splitting wood around the house. Nor do you want one. A full length axe, around 35", is safer and gives better splitting power.

In any case, put the billet to be split on the far side of your chopping block. So if you do swing and miss, the axe buries itself into the block, instead of into you.

Tried a short handled 3 lb. splitter over the weekend and did not like it at all. Besides the head came loose in about 5 minutes. I agree with Raymond 1000 for an actual splitter get something with a long handle.

The Eswing has a thin head and is a limbing tool, not a good splitting tool.

I'd do like the others said and get a splitting axe at the hardware store, or better yet, a maul. They can be had with composite hafts and are cheap.
