I'm wanting to polish the clip on my 550 Griptilian because the paint is all chipping off and looks bad.

Is this something I could use just like steel wool on and/or a scotchbrite pad to do?

What grit sandpaper would you recommend to finish it up and make it really shiny?

Afterwards would I need to put any type of clear coating over it or will the stainless clip be fine just polished to a shine?

;)

Oh well. Too late. I already did it.

Thanks for all the replies.

I used 400 grit sand paper and then 600 grit sand paper and then steel wool (00 Fine).

Go all the way to 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper. That will really polish steel. Put it on something like some rubber gasket material so that you can press hard as you rub it. I usually cut a 6"x6" square of rubber and lay it on my workbench. Then put a piece of sandpaper on top. Then, you can open the blade, press down firmly, and slide it up and down rigorously (move it in the tip to hinge direction, not edge to back direction. It takes a while, but it will polish nicely. Be sure and change the sandpaper frequently as it clogs with steel quickly and the grit comes off easily.

Well now I'm thinking of taking some "rouge" (I think that's what it's called) and running it on a buffing wheel attached to a benchgrinder.

I've done that with stainless for cars before and it comes out like a mirror.

Anyone ever hear of using toothpaste?

I just heard from a friend that sometimes that will polish metal as it's got a very fine grit.

I've never done it before so I don't know.
