For my dad's birthday I want to get him a traditional style folder, it needs to be about a 3 inch blade, bone or stag handle, and a framelock.
Any suggestions?

A traditional style knife with a frame lock?

There are some traditionally styled knives with a liner lock and lock-backs (Buck 110s for example).

Bulldog (GEC) makes a liner lock that is pretty nice.

First; has he been carrying a knife to date, and if so, what kind?

Be careful of overlaying your thoughts of what's a good knife, with what his thoughts and experiance may be.

By framelock, I mean like the style of a 110, forgive me if my terminology is off.
He's been carrying knives his whole life- Buck 110,
approach... Something like a smaller 110 with a bone or stag handle is essentially what I'm looking for.

No big deal. The 110 is a lockback.

Case makes some lockbacks with bone handles. They might be a little smaller than you're looking for with a 2.19" blade. A German Eye Brand medium lockback in stag would work if you can find one. Boker also makes some bone handled lockbacks. An Al Mar Hawk is available in bone or stag as well and has a mid lock which is similar to a lockback. It has a different style to it though and it may not be what he would want.

No worries....we're here to help. :)

Since you already know he likes Bucks....and I don't blame him one bit.....have you considered a Buck from the custom shop? You can pick and choose and basically build the knife you want right on the website. You have choices over almost all aspects of the knife to include blade steel....handle and bolster material...etc. They do a really great job as well. Some of the knives that come out of there are jaw-dropping.

There is a Buck forum here filled with a bunch of guys very passionate about all things Buck.

EDIT: I missed jackknife's buck custom shop suggestion. :)
