Wanted to ask everyone's opinion on this...
I've got a square-frame 112, and I forget off-hand what date the tang-stamp indicates, but I remember looking it up at one point and noting that the blade is 440C instead of 420HC.
Now... this blade has been used & abused by the previous owner... probably had the tip snapped off, but was re-shaped. It still has belly and point, but is almost 1/4" shorter than a factory blade, and about 1/8" narrower.
So, what do you guys think? Send it back for a re-blade, so it's once again the proper length and width? Or keep it the way it is, with the 440C steel, even though the blade is way smaller?

If its a user, and the blade closes full down in the frame, I would probably just use it. Just me tho...

I have reprofiled the tips of several different ones and keep on using them.

And,,,if you do send it in, and it is too old to have replacement parts, they may just replace it. Something to think about if it is sentimental.

I'd send it in for a new blade.

No use putting up with an old shortened and narrowed blade just to have 440C.

The new 420HC is a darned good steel. Call them and ask them about it. They may do it for free and you could always ask Joe if he has any interesting old 112 blades laying around in other steels.

It's worth looking into. Stuff can turn up at Buck and them that asks, gets. Might cost a little extra, but be well worth it.

Another thing is that if the slabs are damaged in any way, you might want to study on making it a project......one of our forum knife artists might have some interesting materials available and fix it up real special.

Possibilities!

I'd keep it like it is and perhaps you'll stumble onto another one some day in better shape. Or one that has a full blade of 425M steel to change that one out. DM

That's a great idea! Thanks! :)
