Lets say you have $1000.00 burning a hole in your pocket and you have to buy a new custom knife, you want some pleaseing to the eye, with fancy handles, damascus blade etc.

Assume, you won't use this knife for anything other than to look at.

what maker and what model are you going to buy and why from them?

If an elf were to give me a thousand dollars and insist that it be spent on a knife or I would forfiet the money (Damn fine Elf)
Then it would be The Gemini Dress Tactical Folder or protege by Johnny Stout. Looking at the pictures makes me excited.

Hi Gregg,

John W. Smith
Joel Chamblin
David Broadwell
John Etzler
Jim Minnick

For less money Id look at:
Johnny Stout
Jeff Chaffee
Aaron Fredrick
Lloyd McConnell
Brian Tighe

Other guys to consider:
W.D. Pease
Frank Centofante
Ralph Turnbull
Stan Fujisaka

Lots of excellent Damascus folder makers in the $700 - $1,200 range.

It is easier to get things done with a kind word and a knife, than with a kind word alone!

thanks Guys keep them coming
i forgot to tell you it should be more art than tactical

I really like the Koji Hara folders, either the airstep or the stainless steel with abolone inlays. For the price you also might want to consider comissioning something from Darrel, I've never seen anything bad with his name on it.

I don't know if this is appropriate to your whims or not, but ever since seeing some of David Winkler's work at a show 5 years ago, I always told myself that if I should ever become wealthy, I'd get him to make me a period friction folder with scrimmed mammoth ivory handle. His stuff combines earthy and artsy in a way that's hard to describe. On one level it looks crude, but if you look at it again, there's evidence of craftsmanship and a good bit of whimsy that seems to me to be lacking in some of the high zuit tact. stuff from some of the 'names'.

BTW-- Being an unemployed salesman must pay pretty good, eh? ;-)

So many knives, so few $.... Actually $1,000 is the low end of art / damascus knives (unless you're looking at a damascus version of a maker's existing tactical knives) Who to look at?

1) John W. Smith - absolutely fantastic classic styled knives. Smoother than black ice. True pieces of art.

2) David Broadwell - Incredible folders with a more dramatic flare. Equally beautiful fit & finish. His carving is superb. Artwork even non knife lovers will appreciate.

3) Greg Lightfoot - Yes the Canadian tactical maker. He is starting to make damascus. His damascus detonator is more tactical, but with gold screws & handle material of choice is exceptional, & less $ than above.

Good luck, enjoy!

About Hara: To my knowledge, he does not have a web page. I have seen quite a few pictures of his work, and most of his folders fall into the two styles, airstep and inlay--both beautiful. I believe that most of the resallers(Robertsons, AZ, KnifeArt...) sell at about maker price, so that's what you're going to pay unless you get one used.

Also look into Jonny Stout ( http://www.concentric.net/%7Ejlstout ). He has some really nice stuff in that range. He doesn't make his own Damascus(if that matters to you) but does make some very impressive knives. Check out the Baron on the available page to see what is possible!

Although I haven't ever seen prices, I just have to add one more name Wolfgang Loecher (http://www.wolfe.to[\url]). Amazing...een edited by amacks (edited 11 March 1999).]

Greg,
You've already seen some of the dramatic, innovative art out there....ie the Turnbull folders with their spiral damascus and titanium bolsters.
If I was looking for something more traditional, but no less artistic, one of my picks would be one Les mentioned, Bill Pease. His work is elegance personified.

personally...for that kind of money...i would buy a knife that i knew...without a shadow of a doubt...that i could resell later for the same amount or more that i paid for it....that means someone with a reputation for consistant value.....there are a lot....it would be hard to decide... a folder from lake or busfield....damascus knife from...gosh there are tooooooo many.. i cant decide......but like everyone... i would buy what i like...with the resell always in the back of my mind....because i am poor.....
