What's G-10?

I'm still frollicking around with my new W.jr. I was whacking up cardboard boxes and some kind of tape residue wound up on the blade. This stuff really stuck. Being a good chemist, I got my trusty can of Acetone and removed it. As my cleaning project got close to the scales it occured to me that if G-10 is synthetic, there are compounds capable of disolving it. I'm happy to report that I was careful, and Acetone did not devour anything but the tape residue, however, what is G-10 and are there things best kept away from it? Also, how frequently should the mechanism on a liner lock be lubricated? I'll bet Acetone could delube the action in a hurry.

Greetings Jack. There are lots better than acetone, so try to avoid using it.
For some technical insights on G10 and its variations go to: www.accurateplastic.thomasregister.com/olc/accurateplastic/
Hope this is helpfull.

Here's a laymans explanation for ya:

G-10 is a glass-based flame retardant epoxy laminate. Has an excellent grip, is lightweight, resistant to most chemical and mechanical abuse and is virtually maintenance free. The material is also used in structural supports, nuclear reactors, computer boards and motocross bike frames....

Jack,

Silicon spray actually works great in removing adhesive. In fact we use it in a pure liquid form all the time for just that purpose where I work. I use a spray made by 3M to remove tape ressidue from my knives.

Thanks for the tip, Tom. Never would've thought of that. Tape is especially a bear to remove from serrations, so that should help in the future.

Another tip I picked up from Fahrney's Pens for use on materials which may be damaged by chemicals, such as Montblanc pens.

Use a piece of fresh adhesive tape, such as your usual Scotch tape to pull off old adhesive.
