Whats the difference between prototypes and production releases

So, I was wondering, what is the difference between prototypes and production releases? I was just wondering because the prototypes look high quality and very ready for release, but then again, I have never handled one?

When does KAI make the decision to take a blade from prototype into production?

What types of issues are commonly found with prototypes?
 
the main issue with prototypes is they sometimes magically transform into many many high end production versions
 
The prototype I have, which will be going back to Kershaw today if I can find the time to run over there, has a CPM-154 blade and sort of a striped pattern G10 texture. The production models came out in a number of variations but were S30V. The first run had the lined pattern but all models then came with the sunburst style pattern used on a number of models.
 
Seems that prototypes are just knives to try out, they don't necessarily mean they're going to make to production they are mainly ideas, and those ideas are tweaked at a later date to be perfected
