First of all, I must confess that I am no expert when it comes to tomahawks. That is why I am asking the question.

I have seen some very nice tomahawks in some knife magazines but I am somewhat in the dark about which are the really good ones. Or rather, which are the ones which the good collectors and users of tomahawks would know about.

How do you tell whether a tomahawk is up to the mark? Do I begin by examining the condition of the handle, the finishing of the wood and the head of the tomahawk?

Daniel Winkler says it all for me. I really think his work is artistically the best. RMJ forge also makes very good looking 'hawks. I also hear that they make good workers. Generally when I look for a 'hawk I look for the same thing I would when buying a knife. You know, what type of materials they use, warranties, and most importantly to me their reputation. If they have alot of customers backing their products then they're worth a try.

I just recieved a hawk from Bill Bagwell he said it is one of six that he has ever made so i consider it pretty collectible

I would say the hawk in the Fowler/Szilaski set (and the knife is no slouch either!). I believe Ed forged the 52100 for both pieces and Joe finished them, but I could be wrong. Ed told me that he pounded the hell out of the hawk chopping some old, hard, dry fence posts and it performed superbly. Durn Purty too!

The best sort of tomahawk will have an old-fashioned shape, be pattern welded, and in your possesion!
