Im looking for a new neck knife. My requirement is small blade size 3' or less, kydex shealth, slim, smooth drawing(main concern). Kina have my eye set on Emerson La Griff or REKAT Fang, anyone have any experience w/ those 2 knives? What else would u recommend? Thanks for the info.

Well, I was all set to buy a Griffe based on pictures and recommendations, but then I went to the store and handled one. Lets just say that I was less than impressed. From the picture you get the impression that when you wrap your hand around it it will fit like a glove and feel really nice in the hand. Well, not for me. It just did not have a satisfying feel whil gripping it. It's really little, and no matter how much I moved it around I just couldn't really get it to sit nicely anywhere in my palm. I like the CRKT Bear Claw a lot better in that respect, although it could be bit thinner and lighter. It is priced more realistically for this type of knife, though.

The Griffe is ridiculously overpriced IMO. Come on, $60 US for what? A couple dollars' (tops) worth of 154CM and Kydex and a little time on a CNC mill? Get real. This is a case of "paying for the name" if I've ever hear of one. As for the Fang, I've never seen one in reality, so I can't speak for it.

There's alot out there to choose from. Polkowski, Tighe, Lightfoot, Nealy, Hayes and Blackwood[talonite],and others, are in my armantorum and I love them all. They all click in and out of the kydex sheaths but otherwise draw very smoothly. For slim, Tighe and Nealy; for forged excellence, Hayes; for a real talonite beauty, Dr. Lathe's; for ease of drawing, probably Nealy and Polkowski. You won't be unhappy with any of them if they fit your size and price.

My pix site below my signature has lots of examples of excellent neck knives. You can check it to see if any of the styles or examples catch your interest and then contact the maker for pricing and availability.

I have found the combination of a River City neck sheath and a BM AFCK to perform very well.

If you have a folder with a "Sypdie" hole that you like, get a neck sheath for it! When I first tried out my combination I was a little skeptical but, 18 months of use has proven it to be a good combination for me. Lately, I have been considering a Spyderco Wegner Jr. and new neck sheath for a slightly more compact package.

I have one of the CRKT "Stiff KISS" neck-knives (with the part serrated "Tanto" blade), and I really like this $20 knife!.

I have wrapped the handle with paracord, and that makes it feel pretty good in my hand. Also, I like the many carry options that come with this knife!.

I think a lot depends on what you want the neck knife for. I've carried my La Griffe almost every day for the last 6 months, on and off duty. I used it extensively as a box cutter/utility knife while moving and it worked great. I like the minimalist type grip it provides.(kinda like a Glock 26/27)Once the index finger finds the hole, it's locked in. I think it's by far the best neck knife for it's size/weight.

If you want a primary blade, the La griffe is a little less than I would usually go with, but for pure backup or for a little bit of utility usage, I say go for it.
My $0.02.

SharpEdge,

I have been looking at all the neck knives on line for a month and agree with nifrand; a Chew neck knife.

He makes two sizes.A small 6 1/2 inch with a 2 1/2 inch ATS-34 blade and carbon fiber handles that Les Roberts has for sale and the "Neck Bone" a 7 inch with a 2 3/4 inch CPM420V blade and carbon fiber handles.

These are not cheap, but IMHO worth the money.

I am getting one of each.

i have used three different neck knives over the years....the emerson la griffe fits my hand well and is compact but i think it is overpriced (i lucked out on getting one from mike payne at knives and things for 48.00 dollars). the second and third ones i have used were newt livesay lp and the woo...both were too long for me but the guys who bought them off me loved them and they are reasonably priced...i handled a crkt bear claw for the first time the other day and it also fit my hand well but i did not have the occasion to carry it for a while...the sheath seems versatile for both neck and belt carry and it is very reasonably priced..thanks...feverdoc

Maybe a Fällkniven WM1? Not actually specifically designed as a "neck knife", but I think that counts in its favour.

Sure, Fällkniven WM is one of very first neck knives in traditional design I could suggest.
If claw like shaped knife is required you can't go wrong with CRKT Bear Claw. Here you can find pretty fresh thread on neck knives.

I really like my BladeForums Spyderco Native with the neck sheath that came with it. I wear this whenever I go mountain biking and find it very comforable and light. I actually use this knive a great deal when biking for all sorts of things (e.g., cutting branches, vines out of spokes and gears, etc). I would highly recommend this knife.

I’ve gotten several neck and multi-carry-option knives over the past couple of years, but the one that I carry most often as a neck knife is a small drop point made by Gary Bradburn. The blade is A2 steel and is similar in size and shape to the NK-1 shown on Gary’s website here. It has a handle of polished black/orange Micarta and a Concealex neck sheath. It’s a simple, elegant little knife, perfectly suited for daily use as a utility blade (I don’t carry a neck knife for self-defense, but I suspect it would also perform admirably in that capacity). It draws extremely quickly and smoothly from the sheath. It has been my experience that many of the neck knives with more closely fitted sheaths (like the LaGriffe and the Newt Livesay models) tend to “bind” in the sheath and don’t break free cleanly. Even though the Bradburn drop point doesn’t “snap” into the sheath, I’ve never had a problem with blade retention. Due to the Micarta handle slabs, the knife feels much better in the hand than any of the skeletonized neck knives I’ve tried (it certainly isn’t bulky or heavy, though). The A2 blade holds a great edge and has been relatively easy to sharpen. Gary offers a wide variety of materials and carry configurations for his knives at very reasonable prices…he’s also a great guy to deal with (he has always put up with my stupid questions very graciously

Thank you very much for all the help.
I played around w/ the CRKT bear claw for sometimes(i work in a knife store), its a col knife, but i dont like the release. When u wear it around ur neck, u have to actually pull the knife pretty hard to get it out, it hurts ur neck after a while and the handle is kina thick too. Thanks for all the custom recommendations, im more like a production knife guy, and would like to personally handle a knife before i buy it. Also i try to support local cutlery stores by not buying knives online too much, belive me, the local knife stores are struggling. Ther is no way they can compete w/ online knife store's prices, and i hate to see them all close down. Anyhow, i think i'll give la griffe a try. Thanks for all the help.

SharpEdge,
It is really very easy to customize CRKT Bear Claw to make it more neck-carry-friendly. Please follow this link, add some fantasy and it will be your knife
